10 Towns on French Riviera Ranked: From Overrated to Must-Visit (2026)

Before visiting the French Riviera, I genuinely thought every town would be equally beautiful. I figured I’d hop from one place to the next and they’d all have the same charm, just with slightly different views.

After spending three days based in Nice and visiting Monaco and Menton, I quickly realized that wasn’t true at all.

Some places completely exceeded my expectations, while others felt a bit overrated. So instead of giving you another generic list of towns on the French Riviera, I wanted to rank the ones I’ve experienced myself and tell you which ones I’d actually recommend if you only have a few days in the region.

If you’re trying to decide which towns on the French Riviera are actually worth your time, this guide should make planning your trip a whole lot easier.

If you’re traveling on a budget, stay in Nice.

It’s by far the cheapest place to base yourself, with the biggest selection of hostels, budget hotels, and apartments. It’s also perfectly connected by train, making it easy to visit other towns on the French Riviera without constantly changing accommodation.

Getting Around the French Riviera

One of the best things about the French Riviera is how easy it is to get around without a car.

The TER regional trains connect most coastal towns, including Monaco, Menton, Antibes, Cannes, and Villefranche-sur-Mer, while local buses cover places like Èze and smaller villages further inland.

Unless you’re planning to explore the countryside, I honestly wouldn’t bother renting a car.

My Ranking of the Best Towns on French Riviera

This ranking is obviously based on my own experience after spending three days exploring the French Riviera. Everyone travels differently, but if I were planning this trip again, this is exactly the order I’d visit these towns.

1. Menton

Menton was easily my favorite place on the French Riviera.

It has everything I was hoping to find when I came to southern France: colorful streets, beautiful sea views, a relaxed atmosphere, and far fewer crowds than places like Monaco or Nice. It feels like a proper Mediterranean town rather than a luxury destination.

If you only have time for one day trip from Nice, I’d honestly choose Menton.

2. Nice

Nice is the best place to stay if you’re exploring the French Riviera.

I loved wandering around Vieux Nice, walking along the Promenade des Anglais, and simply using the city as my base. It’s also the most budget-friendly place in the region, especially if you’re staying in hostels like I did.

I probably wouldn’t spend more than two days actually sightseeing here, but I’d definitely stay here again.

3. Monaco

Monaco is one of those places I think everyone should see once.

Walking around Monte Carlo, the marina, and the Prince’s Palace was worth it, but I also don’t think you need more than half a day here. Hotels, restaurants, and pretty much everything else are incredibly expensive, so I definitely wouldn’t stay here.

As a day trip from Nice though? Absolutely.

4. Villefranche-sur-Mer

If you’re looking for beautiful beaches without the crowds of Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer should be high on your list. It’s small, easy to reach by train, and perfect for a relaxed afternoon by the sea.

5. Èze

Èze is probably the most photogenic village on the French Riviera.

The medieval streets and views are incredible, but getting there independently is a bit more annoying than people expect, which is why I wouldn’t rank it higher.

6. Antibes

Antibes feels like a good balance between Nice and Cannes. It has beautiful old streets, beaches, and a much more relaxed atmosphere than some of the bigger Riviera destinations.

7. Cannes

This is probably my most controversial opinion.

Yes, Cannes is famous. Yes, the promenade is beautiful.

But unless you’re visiting during the film festival, I honestly think there are better towns on the French Riviera to spend your time in.

8. Saint-Paul-de-Vence

If you enjoy art galleries, quiet streets, and hilltop villages, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is well worth adding to your itinerary.

9. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

Known for luxury villas and coastal walks, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is beautiful but not somewhere I’d prioritize if it’s your first trip to the French Riviera.

10. Saint-Tropez

Honestly, unless you’re specifically interested in beach clubs, luxury shopping, or yachts, I don’t think Saint-Tropez is worth the long journey from Nice. It’s iconic, but there are places on the French Riviera I’d recommend visiting first.

The perfect base for exploring the French Riviera, with plenty to do, great transport connections, and accommodation for every budget.

🏖️ Best beaches: Nice
The city’s long coastline gives you the biggest choice of beaches, from lively public beaches to private beach clubs.

🎒 Best for backpackers: Nice
It’s the only place on the French Riviera with several hostels and the easiest destination to visit on a budget.

💎 Best for luxury: Monaco
Luxury hotels, casinos, yachts, and sports cars everywhere you look. If that’s the experience you’re after, Monaco is hard to beat.

🚆 Best day trip: Menton
Just 35 minutes from Nice by train, beautiful, colorful, and far less crowded than Monaco.

❤️ Most underrated: Menton
It doesn’t get nearly as much attention as Monaco or Cannes, but it ended up being my favorite town on the French Riviera.

⭐ Most overrated: Cannes
It’s famous for the film festival, but outside that, I’d personally spend my time elsewhere.

Before visiting, I honestly thought every town on the French Riviera would feel the same. After spending a few days here, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Some places completely lived up to the hype, others didn’t, and a few surprised me in the best possible way. If you’re planning your own trip, don’t try to cram every town into your itinerary. Stay based in Nice, pick a few places that match your travel style, and actually enjoy them instead of spending your whole holiday moving from train to train.

For me, Menton was the biggest surprise, while Nice was easily the best place to stay if you’re traveling on a budget.
