If you’re wondering about the best time to visit Monaco, the answer depends less on the weather and more on what kind of trip you’re planning. Monaco is tiny, so you’ll be walking almost everywhere regardless of the season. What really changes throughout the year is the number of tourists, hotel prices, and the overall atmosphere.

My Experience Visiting Monaco

I visited Monaco during the summer, and honestly, I loved it.

The weather was exactly what I wanted: hot, sunny, and perfect for walking around all day. Yes, there were plenty of tourists, but because Monaco is so small and I was only there for the day, I never really felt like the crowds ruined my visit.

Would it have been quieter in May or September? Definitely. But if, like me, you actually enjoy travelling in summer and don’t mind sharing the streets with other visitors, I wouldn’t let that stop you from going. The atmosphere is lively, everything is open, and the Mediterranean looks exactly like you’d imagine.

The only thing I’d probably avoid is staying overnight in Monaco during peak season. Hotel prices are already expensive all year, and summer only makes them worse. I’d still stay in Nice and do Monaco as a day trip, no matter the season.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Monaco if you want good weather without the biggest crowds.

Temperatures are usually warm enough to comfortably explore the city on foot, flowers are blooming, and you’ll generally find a much more relaxed atmosphere than during the peak summer months.

If you’re not specifically looking for beach weather, I’d say late spring is one of the best times to visit Monaco.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is peak season in Monaco, and honestly, I understand why.

This is when I visited, and the weather was exactly what I wanted: hot, sunny, and perfect for spending the day outside. Since I was only visiting Monaco as a day trip from Nice, I didn’t really mind the crowds. In fact, the lively atmosphere made the visit even more enjoyable.

The only downside is that accommodation prices become even more expensive than usual, which is another reason I’d recommend staying in Nice instead of Monaco.

If you’re already visiting the French Riviera during summer for places like Nice, Menton or the beaches, adding Monaco to your itinerary makes perfect sense.

Autumn (September to November)

If I had to recommend one season to most people, it would probably be autumn.

The weather is still warm, the Mediterranean is usually warm enough for swimming during September, and there are noticeably fewer tourists compared to July and August.

You’ll also find slightly better accommodation prices and a much calmer atmosphere while still enjoying beautiful weather.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is the quietest time to visit Monaco.

Don’t expect beach weather, but compared to many other European destinations, temperatures are still quite mild. The city feels much less crowded, hotels can be cheaper, and if you’re visiting around December you’ll also find Christmas decorations and festive events.

If your goal is simply to walk around Monaco and enjoy the scenery, winter can actually be a surprisingly good time to visit.

When to Avoid Visiting Monaco

I wouldn’t say there’s a bad time to visit Monaco, but if you don’t enjoy huge crowds or paying even higher prices than usual, I’d probably avoid August.

This is when many Europeans are on holiday, cruise ships regularly stop in Monaco, trains from Nice can get very busy, and hotel prices are at their highest.

That said, if you’re already travelling around southern France during summer, I still wouldn’t skip Monaco. I’d just plan an early start, expect more people, and avoid staying overnight if you’re travelling on a budget.

July and August if you’re combining Monaco with beach days in Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer or Menton.

The easiest way to get to Monaco is by train from Nice. The journey only takes around 25 minutes, trains run frequently throughout the day, and you arrive right in the centre of Monaco.

If you’re flying into Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, you can either take the tram into the city before catching the train or book an airport transfer directly to Monaco if you’re travelling with lots of luggage or simply want the easiest option.
