Menton Guide (2026): Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting The Most Beautiful Village of the French Riviera

Before visiting Menton, I didn’t know much about it. Like most people, I only knew it was somewhere between Nice and Italy, and I thought it’d just be a quick stop before moving on.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Menton ended up being one of my favorite places on the French Riviera. It has colorful streets, beautiful beaches, amazing Italian food, and a much more relaxed atmosphere than places like Nice or Monaco.

Where Is Menton?

One of the best things about Menton is its location.

It’s the last town on the French Riviera before the Italian border, which means you’re close to Nice, Monaco, and even another country if you fancy crossing into Italy for lunch.

Getting here is really easy, especially if you’re already staying somewhere else on the Riviera.

Is Menton Worth Visiting?

For me, absolutely.

I originally thought I’d spend a couple of hours walking around before catching the next train, but Menton surprised me. It felt quieter, less crowded, and much more authentic than I expected.

If you’re looking for somewhere with colorful streets, great food, beaches, and easy access to the rest of the French Riviera, I don’t think you can go wrong. I’d happily come back and spend a few days here again.

Is Menton Safe?

I felt completely safe walking around Menton, even as a solo female traveler.

Like anywhere, it’s always worth using common sense, but compared to many other destinations I’ve visited, Menton felt very relaxed.

Best Time to Visit Menton

I don’t think there’s a bad time to visit Menton, but I’d personally choose spring or early autumn – but really what I like is summer weather everywhere.

The weather is warm enough to enjoy the beaches without the huge summer crowds, and it’s much nicer for walking around the Old Town. If you’re visiting in summer, you’ll get the best beach weather, while winter is quieter and still surprisingly mild compared to many other places in Europe.

How Many Days Do You Need in Menton?

You can easily see the highlights of Menton in a day, but I actually think it’s worth staying longer if you can.

With two or three days, you can slow down, enjoy the beaches, take a couple of day trips, and experience the relaxed atmosphere that made me like Menton so much in the first place.

If I had to plan my trip again, this is exactly how I’d do it:

1 day: Explore Menton itself and see all the main highlights.
2 days: Spend one day in Menton and one exploring somewhere nearby like Monaco or Italy.
3 days: Use Menton as your base and spend a few days village hopping around the French Riviera without constantly changing hotels.

Best Things to Do in Menton

Even though Menton is small, there’s honestly plenty to keep you busy.

Spend some time getting lost around the colorful Old Town, relax on the beaches, climb up to the viewpoints, wander through the local markets, and make sure you leave room for plenty of good food. Those were easily my favorite parts of visiting Menton.

Where to Stay in Menton

Choosing where to stay in Menton is actually pretty simple.

If you want to be close to the main attractions, I’d look around the Old Town, Promenade du Soleil, or Garavan. They’re all easy to walk around, close to restaurants and the beach, and make a great base for exploring both Menton and the rest of the French Riviera.

Visiting Menton as a Day Trip

If you’re staying in Nice, visiting Menton as a day trip is honestly one of the easiest things you can do.

That’s exactly what I did, although I squeezed Monaco and Menton into the same day, and I’d actually recommend doing the same if you’re short on time. They’re so close together that it works surprisingly well.

If you don’t feel like organizing everything yourself, you can also join a guided tour—just keep in mind that most tours leave from Nice rather than Menton.

Best Day Trips from Menton

One of the best things about staying in Menton is how easy it is to explore the rest of the French Riviera.

Within a short train ride, you can be wandering around Monaco, spending the day in Nice, exploring medieval Èze, or even crossing into Italy for lunch. It’s honestly one of the best bases if you want to spend a few days village hopping without constantly changing hotels.

How to Get Around Menton

Getting around Menton is really easy, and unless you’re planning to explore further along the French Riviera, you probably won’t need a car.

I walked pretty much everywhere while I was there. If you want to visit nearby places like Monaco, Nice, or Italy, the train is by far the easiest option. There are also buses connecting the surrounding towns, but I personally found the train much more convenient.

If you’re planning to explore several villages in one trip, renting a car gives you the most flexibility.

Practical Travel Tips

A few things I’d keep in mind before visiting Menton:

Wear comfortable shoes because the Old Town has plenty of hills and staircases.
Bring your swimwear if you’re visiting during the warmer months—you’ll definitely want to spend some time at the beach.
If you’re planning to visit the local market, try to go earlier in the day for the best atmosphere.

Is Menton expensive to visit?

Not really. Compared to places like Monaco, I found Menton much more affordable. You can easily visit on a budget by walking everywhere, using regional trains, and enjoying the many free beaches and viewpoints.

Menton is famous for its colorful Old Town, beautiful Mediterranean beaches, lemon festival, Italian influence, and relaxed atmosphere. It’s also one of the prettiest towns on the French Riviera.

Can you walk everywhere in Menton?

Yes. Menton is a very walkable town, and I explored almost everything on foot. The only exception is if you’re planning day trips to nearby towns like Monaco or Nice, where the train is the easiest option.

Is Menton better than Nice?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Nice is much bigger and has more attractions, while Menton feels quieter, more colorful, and more relaxed. Personally, I preferred Menton’s atmosphere, but they’re very different destinations.

Is Menton close to Italy?

Yes! One of the coolest things about Menton is that Italy is only a few minutes away by train. You can even walk toward the border or take a quick trip to Ventimiglia for lunch and a market day.

When I first added Menton to my French Riviera itinerary, I honestly thought it’d just be another pretty town I’d spend a couple of hours in before moving on.

Instead, it became one of my favorite places on the entire Riviera.
