Is Monaco Safe for Solo Female Travelers? - She is Lost Around the World

I visited Monaco as a longer trip where I traveled solo to Italy, San Marino, France, Monaco, Montenegro and Albania.

To visit Monaco I took a bus from Milan, Italy, to Nice, where I stayed based for three nights and then I did a day trip to the village of Menton, and Monaco, my country 48/197.

In this guide I’m going to give you my personal experience and answer the question: Is Monaco safe for solo female travelers? I’ll tell you how I felt as a woman traveling alone, what I liked and didn’t like so much, the best things to do in Monaco, and I will give you some practical safety tips as a woman who has been traveling solo for 10+ years and who has visited 62 countries.

Is Monaco safe for solo female travelers? My Quick Answer

To answer this one quickly, yes, Monaco is a safe destination to visit as a woman traveling alone.

Besides being an extremely small country, Monaco is one of the most expensive countries in the world, meaning safety and security in the streets is extremely important for residents and visitors.

So, if you are traveling to Monaco and are concerned about safety as a woman traveling alone, or if Monaco is safe in general, the answer is yes, Monaco is a safe place to visit, not only for solo female travelers, but also for families, couples with kids and even older people.

Is Monaco safe for solo female travelers? My personal experience

I took the train from Nice and arrived in Monaco and immedietaly felt safe. I explored all morning by myself and never had any concerns about my safety. I felt comofortable everywhere, even around the train station which in touristy areas can sometimes be a concern regarding pickpockets, but not in Monaco.

Monaco vs. Nice

If I compare Monaco and Nice interms of safety I would defnitely say Monaco is much safer than Nice.

Nice is a huge city and obviously very touristic and because of that, as a woman traveling alone, I had to be more alert regarding my safety, specially around areas where there is a lot of tourists and around the train station area where pickpockets are known to be around.

So if you ask me between Monaco and Nice which one is safer, the answer is defnitely Monaco.

Monaco vs. Menton

If I compare Monaco to Menton in terms of safety I would say as a woman traveling alone I felt pretty much the same in both.

Monaco felt much smaller than Menton and maybe I would say for that reason it can be considered a bit safer in terms of me feeling more relaxed. Lets not forget we are talking about two places that even though they are a 10 minute train journey appart, they are in different countries.

Practical Safety Tips for women traveling alone in Monaco

Even though I found Monaco very safe, I always follow the same basic safety rules no matter where I travel.

Keep your valuables close, especially around the train station and tourist attractions.
Avoid leaving your bag unattended while sitting at cafés or restaurants.
If you’re arriving from Nice by train, keep an eye on your belongings during the journey, especially in summer when trains are much busier.
Stay aware of your surroundings if you’re walking around late at night, even though Monaco is generally very quiet.
Wear comfortable shoes. Monaco is much hillier than it looks, and you’ll end up walking a lot more than you expect.

Get Travel Insurance

No matter where I’m going, I always make sure to get a good travel insurance. Monaco is a safe country, but travel insurance is what protects you from things you cannot control. And as someone who has had more unpredictable situations than most, and ended up needing my travel insurance more times than I’m happy to admit, this has become a non-negotiable.

Be Connected 24/7

Another one of my golden rules as a solo female traveler is to always be connected no matter what. I made the mistake before of arriving or being in countries where I didn’t buy a SIM card of an eSIM and I can tell you it is a mistake and incredibly stressful.

If you are traveling to Monaco you are probably either staying in Nice or other French Riviera villages, or at least visiting, which means a SIM card from France will stop working in Monaco and vice-versa. So I highly suggest getting a regional Europe eSIM instead, as that will work in both France and Monaco, as well as Italy if you decide to take a day trip to the Italian Riviera that is very close buy.

Take a Guided Tour

For women traveling alone I always suggest organzied group trips. These are great specially for solo travelers because it allows you to be able to enjoy and make the most of your time without the constant safety concern, and for the French Riviera and Monaco tours they have the great advantage of including several places and not cover just one destination.

So, if you ask me, and considering also the prices in Monaco, I would highly suggest staying based in Nice, where you can find much better value for hotels, and then visit Monaco on a day trip – either independetly or with an organized tour.

Final Thoughts: Is Monaco Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

So, is Monaco safe for solo female travelers? Absolutely.

Out of all the places I visited during this trip, Monaco was probably the one where I felt the most relaxed. It’s clean, well maintained, easy to walk around, and I never once felt uncomfortable exploring by myself.
Would I recommend staying in Monaco? Probably not, mainly because it’s incredibly expensive. Instead, I’d recommend staying in Nice, which is exactly what I did, and visiting Monaco as a day trip. It’s only around 25 minutes by train, making it one of the easiest and safest day trips you can do on the French Riviera.
