Before coming to Kochi, I thought I would stay for 4 or 5 days. Instead, I ended up staying for almost 3 months.

After spending that much time there, I got to know the different areas pretty well and realized that choosing the right hotel and location can make a big difference to your trip.

In this guide, I’ll share some of the best hotels in Kochi for every budget, from affordable homestays to 3-star, 4-star and 5-star hotels.

Hotels in Kochi: Quick Answer

If it’s your first time in Kochi, I recommend staying in Fort Kochi.

That’s where I stayed for most of my time in the city, and it’s the area I would choose again. It’s convenient for sightseeing, has plenty of cafés and restaurants, and I found it much nicer to stay in than Ernakulam, especially as a solo traveler.

My Tips Before Booking a Hotel in Kochi

There are a few things I REALLY wish I knew before booking accommodation in Kochi.

First, do not underestimate the humidity. Kerala heat feels completely different, and after spending all day outside, having AC can make a huge difference.

I also wouldn’t stay too far from Fort Kochi unless you specifically want a more local city experience. Ernakulam can look cheaper or more practical on paper, but constantly relying on transport to get back and forth gets annoying quickly.

The ferries and Water Metro are useful, but I wouldn’t want to depend on them every single day. The same goes for autos. They’re cheap compared to Europe, but constantly negotiating rides and sitting in traffic gets tiring.

And if you work remotely, check the Wi-Fi situation before booking. Internet quality can vary a lot between accommodations in Kochi.

Best Areas to Stay in Kochi

Fort Kochi – Best for First-Time Visitors

If it’s your first time visiting Kochi, this is where I’d stay without even thinking twice.

Fort Kochi is where you’ll find most of the cafés, main attractions, restaurants, waterfront areas and the side of Kochi that most travelers come to experience.

It’s also much easier to explore on foot than other parts of the city, which makes a HUGE difference. I loved being able to leave my accommodation and walk to cafés, restaurants or the waterfront without having to get an auto every single time.

The atmosphere also feels much calmer than Ernakulam and other busier parts of Kochi. After spending almost three months in the city, Fort Kochi is still the area I would choose if I went back.

Ernakulam – Best for Short Stays and Transport Connections

Ernakulam feels completely different from Fort Kochi.

This is the more modern, busy side of the city, with shopping malls, office buildings, bigger roads and much more of a local city atmosphere.

It can be a practical place to stay if you’re arriving by train, only spending one night in Kochi or mainly using the city as a transport hub.

However, I wouldn’t choose Ernakulam for a first trip if you actually want to explore Kochi. You’ll constantly need transport to reach Fort Kochi, and you don’t get the cafés, smaller streets and slower atmosphere that make Fort Kochi much nicer to stay in.

Mattancherry – Best for Culture and a More Local Feel

Mattancherry is right next to Fort Kochi but feels more local, traditional and less touristy.

This is where you’ll find Jew Town, the spice markets and smaller local streets, so it’s a good option if you’re more interested in the cultural side of Kochi and want to stay away from the busiest tourist areas.

You’re still close to Fort Kochi, but the overall atmosphere is different and feels more local.

For most of my time in Kochi, I stayed at The Hosteller Fort Kochi, Ocean Edge

I liked the location because I could walk around Fort Kochi without constantly needing an auto, and the hostel had a good social atmosphere without feeling like a crazy party hostel. The rooftop was also one of my favorite parts, and I spent plenty of evenings up there playing pool and hanging out with other travelers.

Best Homestays in Kochi

If you’d rather stay somewhere smaller and more personal than a hotel, Kochi has plenty of homestays, especially around Fort Kochi.

Jasmin Villa

Jasmin Villa would be my first option to compare if you want a homestay that works well for a first trip to Kochi.

It’s in Fort Kochi, so you can stay close to the main area I recommend without paying for a larger hotel. It also has excellent guest reviews and is a good option if you want something simple, affordable and smaller than a traditional hotel.

If you want more facilities than a homestay without paying for a higher-end hotel, there are some good 3-star options around Fort Kochi.

Fort Abode

Fort Abode is one of the first 3-star hotels I’d compare for a stay in Fort Kochi. The location makes it convenient for exploring the area, and it also has an outdoor swimming pool, which is a definite bonus in Kochi’s heat.

It’s a good option if you want something comfortable and well located without moving into 4- or 5-star prices.

Tissa’s Inn is another Fort Kochi option, but with more of a small boutique feel.

Eighth Bastion Fort Kochi

Its biggest advantage for me is the location. You’re staying in the area I recommend most for a first trip while still getting more facilities than you would from a budget hotel or homestay.

Best 5-Star Hotels in Kochi

If you want a luxury stay in Kochi, I’d first decide whether you want to stay right in Fort Kochi or choose a larger resort where the hotel itself is a bigger part of the trip.

Forte Kochi

Forte Kochi is the option I’d look at if you want a 5-star hotel without giving up the location I recommend most.

You’re right in Fort Kochi, so you can walk out of the hotel and be close to the streets, cafés, restaurants and sights you’re actually coming here to explore. It’s also much smaller than the big resort-style hotels around Kochi.

Best for: Luxury in Fort Kochi and first-time visitors

Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty

Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty makes more sense if you want the full luxury resort experience.

It’s a much larger waterfront property on Bolgatty Island, with multiple restaurants, pools and extensive facilities. I’d choose this over Forte Kochi if spending time at the hotel itself is an important part of your trip rather than simply having a luxury base for exploring.

FAQs About Hotels in Kochi

Is Fort Kochi or Ernakulam better for travelers?

For most first-time visitors, I recommend Fort Kochi. It’s easier for sightseeing, has plenty of cafés and restaurants, and you can explore much more on foot.

Ernakulam is better if you want transport connections, shopping or more of a modern city atmosphere.

Should I stay in Fort Kochi?

For a first trip, yes. Fort Kochi is the area I would choose again and where I spent most of my time during my three months in Kochi.

It’s especially convenient if you want to be close to the main sights without constantly relying on autos, ferries or taxis.

Should I stay near Kochi Airport?

Unless you have a very early flight, I wouldn’t.

Kochi Airport is far from Fort Kochi and the main sightseeing areas, so staying near the airport can mean spending a lot more time going back and forth.

Is Fort Kochi walkable?

Yes. Fort Kochi is one of the easiest parts of Kochi to explore on foot, with many cafés, restaurants and attractions relatively close together.

That was one of the biggest reasons I preferred staying there.

Are hotels in Kochi expensive?

Kochi has accommodation for pretty much every budget, from inexpensive homestays and budget hotels to luxury 5-star properties.

Fort Kochi can be slightly more expensive than less touristy parts of the city, but there are still plenty of affordable places to stay.

How many days should I stay in Kochi?

For most travelers, around 2–4 days is enough to explore Fort Kochi and see the main sights without rushing.

I obviously stayed considerably longer, but you definitely don’t need three months. 😂

Is Fort Kochi good for solo travelers?

Yes. I found Fort Kochi much easier and less overwhelming than many busier Indian cities.

There are also plenty of hostels, homestays, cafés and other places used to international travelers, which makes it a good base if you’re traveling alone.
