Is Nice Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

As a woman from Portugal trying to visit every country in the world, I’ve been traveling solo as a woman for 10+ years and I’m lucky that i’ve managed to visit 62 countries.

I spent three days in Nice, as I wanted to visit Monaco which was a new country for me.

Is Nice safe for solo female travellers? My Quick Answer

So, is Nice safe for solo female travellers? Overrall I think so.

No destination is 100% safe, but I personally felt very comfortable in Nice. But it is a big city in Western Europe and a very touristic one, which obviously means there are pickpockets around the tourist areas and train station, but I still felt safe exploring on my own and I didn’t face a single issue or had any scary moments to tell.

Is Nice safe for solo female travellers? My personal experience

So in this post answering Is Nice Safe for Solo female travellers I want to share my experience from the three days I spent in Nice, and I want to give you some practical tips on how to stay safe as a woman traveling alone.

I know how scary solo travel can be, specially for us women, but I promise you the fear is mostly in your mind that makes everything more chatastrophic than it is, and how you are more than capable of going on that trip you have been dreaming about.

Nice Day Time Safety

During the day, I never felt uncomfortable walking around Nice on my own. I explored the Old Town, the Promenade des Anglais, the port and even wandered through smaller streets without ever feeling like I needed to rush back somewhere or constantly look over my shoulder.

That said, is Nice safe for solo female travellers during the day? I’d say yes, but with the same common sense you’d use in any busy European city. Nice attracts millions of visitors every year, so the areas around Nice Ville train station, the Old Town and the Promenade can attract pickpockets simply because they’re full of tourists. I never had any issues myself, but I kept my bag zipped, didn’t leave my phone sticking out of my pocket and stayed aware of my surroundings in crowded places.

Other than that, I found Nice easy to explore alone. I used the tram, walked almost everywhere and never felt like being a solo female traveller stopped me from enjoying the city.

Safety for solo female travellers

Nice vs. Menton

I personally felt safe in both destinations.

The main difference isn’t that one felt safer than the other — it’s that Nice is a much larger city with far more tourists. Because of that, I was simply more aware of my belongings around Nice Ville train station and the busiest tourist areas, while in Menton I didn’t really think about it as much.

Apart from that, my experience as a solo female traveller was positive in both places.

Practical Safety Tips for women traveling alone in Nice

Stay somewhere central

Staying in the city centre means you’ll be within walking distance of most attractions and won’t need to rely on transport late at night.

When traveling alone as a woman, choosing the right accommodation can make or break my trip. Way too many times I ended up choosing bad accommodation because I wanted to save a few euros and it had a huge impact on my trip.

Over the last few years of my travels I always make sure to choose an accommodations right in the city center. I want to stay in a place that is safe, that has people walking around, other tourists so I blend in, and an area full of cafes and restaurants so I can easily find food.

Be extra careful around Nice Ville train station

This is where I’d be the most alert. It’s the main transport hub for trains to Monaco, Menton and the rest of the French Riviera, which also makes it one of the busiest places in the city.

Keep your backpack zipped, don’t leave your luggage unattended and stay aware of your surroundings.

Whatch your belongings in busy tourist areas

The Old Town, the Promenade des Anglais and the beachfront attract thousands of visitors every day during summer. They all felt safe to me, but they’re also the places where pickpockets are most likely to target distracted tourists.

Stay connected

One of the most important things as a woman traveling alone is to always have internet. You want to make sure you can research everything quickly, use maps to not get lost, know where you are at all times and search for transport schedule, specially while doing the French Riviera day trips and constanlty being on the move.

If you are only traveling Nice then you can take an eSIM just for France. But if you are taking day trips to Monaco or the Italian border, I would highly advise you to take a regional/european eSIM otherwise once you cross the border you will lose connection.

Join group tours

Whenever I feel overwhelmed while traveling alone as a woman, I always love the option of joining a group tour. I always have the best time, end up meeting other solo travelers and it gives me the chance to see places I probably would miss on my own.

Nice is a great base for the French Riveira for this reason as well. There are so many amazing group tours to choose from, wether to explore Nice or to go beyond the city and explore the other villages if you don’t want to deal with the transport logistics on your own.

Get travel insurance

As someone who has been to 62 countries and has made the mistake, several times, of traveling without insurance, I highly advise you to get travel insurance before your trip.

Yes, it seems like a waste of money but that is only until something happens and you find yourself alone in another country without an insurance to cover you.

Avoid walking alone at night

I know this isn’t that fair, but as a woman traveling alone I always tell other women to not go walking the streets at night or even going out to party and have a few drinks.

During the day most places are safe even for women traveling alone, but night safety is always a different story. Less people in the streets, less foreigners and tourists wandering around, which puts you and any woman at more risk of something bad happening.

I personally avoid walking alone through quiet streets late at night whenever I travel, no matter the destination. If you’re going out for dinner or drinks, stick to busy areas, avoid walking home alone if you’ve been drinking, and use an Uber or Bolt if you’re staying further away.

Final thoughts: is Nice safe for solo female travellers?

So, is Nice safe for solo female travellers? From my own experience, yes.

I spent three days using Nice as my base while exploring Monaco and Menton, and I never had any problems walking around alone. But, like any popular European city, you should stay aware of your belongings around the train station and the busiest tourist areas, but that’s really just common travel sense rather than something specific to Nice.

If you are considering a trip to Nice and dream of exploring the French Riviera, but you don’t have anyone to travel with, I would say this is a great solo trip for women and one I would recommend. The city is easy to navigate, full of tourists which is always easier than to travel to more remote places, and the day trips to all other towns of the French Riviera are really easy to do.
