Nice sits right on the French Riviera, so it enjoys some of the best weather in the country. Summers are hot, sunny and busy, winters are much better than most of France but rainier, and spring/autumn sit somewhere in between but with a more unpredictable weather.

Is Spring the best time to visit Nice? Spring is a solid choice if you want good weather without the summer price tag or the summer crowds.

It’s warm enough to spend full days walking the promenade, wandering the old town and sitting outside for lunch, without the heat that summer brings. The sea will still be a bit cold for swimming though.

Visiting Nice in Summer (June-August)

Is Summer the best time to visit Nice? This is when I went, and I’d pick it again.

I’m a summer person, plain and simple. I hate cold, grey, rainy travel — if I’m going somewhere I want sun. I visited right at the start of summer and got exactly that: sunny every day, warm enough to swim, everything open and busy.

Prices were already up since it was summer, but going early meant I avoided full peak-August prices. Crowds were there too, mostly on the trains going to the smaller Riviera villages — everyone does those as day trips, so the trains get packed. The rides are short though, so it’s not a big deal, just something to expect.

Visiting Nice in Autumn (September-November)

Is Autum the best time to visit Nice? September is probably the second-best time to visit Nice. The weather is often still warm enough for the beach, but with noticeably fewer people around than peak summer.

Later into autumn the weather gets more unpredictable, so it becomes a bit of a gamble the further into the season you go.

Visiting Nice in Winter (December-February)

Is winter the best time to visit Nice? Not my choice, personally.

The whole point of the French Riviera for me is sun and sea, and winter just doesn’t give you that. It’s cheaper and quieter, so if that matters more to you than weather, go for it. Just know it’s not the version of Nice I’d want.

Best weather: June to August. If you’re coming for the beaches, the promenade and that classic Riviera feeling, summer is hands down the best time.

Budget travelers: November to March. Hotel prices drop noticeably, but you’ll trade the sunshine for cooler, wetter days.

Photography: Late spring through summer. Everything photographs better with proper sunshine and clear skies.

Day trips: Spring, summer and early autumn. Since Nice is the main base for day trips to Monaco, Menton and the smaller Riviera villages, these months give you the best odds of good weather for train journeys along the coast.

Avoiding crowds: April, May and September. You still get good weather without the peak summer crush, and the trains out to the villages are noticeably less packed.

Best time to visit Nice: My Personal Recommendation

If you’ve read my other guides you already know this about me — I always pick warm weather. I can’t do a trip with grey skies and rain, it’s just not worth it to me.

So for the Riviera there was never really another option. I wanted sun and I got it, by going right at the start of summer instead of peak August. Trains to the villages were packed and things cost more than they would’ve in spring, but I’d make the same choice again.

Nice has its own international airport, so it’s one of the easiest cities on the Riviera to fly into directly. From there it’s a short transfer into the city center.

If you’re planning to explore more of the coast — Monaco, Menton, Èze, Villefranche-sur-Mer — the train network along the Riviera is excellent and makes Nice a really easy base to work from.

That’s what I did, and I wouldn’t change it. Sunny, warm, sea was good for swimming, and I dodged the worst of the August prices and crowds. The packed trains to the villages were the only real downside, and even that was minor.

If budget or crowds matter more to you than weather, spring or early autumn will still work fine. But summer’s my pick, no question.
