When I visited Menton during my French Riviera trip, I quickly realised you don’t need a complicated plan to enjoy it. It’s a small town, everything is within walking distance, and that’s honestly part of its charm.

Whether you’re visiting Menton on a day trip or staying a few nights, having a rough itinerary helps you make the most of your time without feeling like you’re rushing from one attraction to the next.

This Menton itinerary is exactly how I’d plan my trip if I came back. It starts with exploring Menton itself and, if you’ve got more time, adds some of the best nearby villages and towns that are easy to visit from here.

Menton Itinerary: My Quick Recommendation

• 1 day → Explore Menton itself.
• 2 days → Spend one full day in Menton and one day visiting a nearby village like Monaco or Nice.
• 3 days or more → Use Menton as your base while exploring more of the French Riviera before finishing with a relaxing beach day.

Day 1 – Explore Menton

If you’re following this Menton itinerary, I’d spend your first day simply exploring the town itself.

Start your morning with breakfast at one of the cafés near the Old Town before heading into Menton’s colorful streets. Spend a couple of hours wandering around without rushing, stopping at the Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange, climbing up to the cemetery viewpoint and taking in some of the best views over the town.

Around lunchtime, head back towards the seafront and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants overlooking the Mediterranean. After that, continue walking along the promenade, browse the local market if it’s open and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the beach or simply getting lost in the streets again.

Finish your day watching the sunset by the water before finding somewhere for dinner.

Day 2 – Explore Beyond Menton

If you’ve got a second day, I’d use it to explore somewhere else on the French Riviera.

One of the best things about following a Menton itinerary is that you’re already in the perfect location to visit some incredible places without having to move hotels. Most of them are only a short train ride away, which makes them really easy day trips.

Some of my favorite day trips from Menton are:

Monaco – If it’s your first time on the French Riviera, this would probably be my top recommendation. It’s only around 15 minutes away by train and you can easily spend the whole day exploring the old town, the marina and Monte Carlo.

Nice – Perfect if you want a bigger city with more restaurants, museums, shopping and beaches. It’s only around 40 minutes away and makes a really easy day trip.

Èze – One of the most beautiful villages on the French Riviera, famous for its medieval streets and incredible views over the Mediterranean.

Ventimiglia, Italy – One of the easiest international day trips you can do. In less than 15 minutes by train you’ll be in Italy, where you can enjoy the markets, cafés and a completely different atmosphere.

If you don’t want to organise everything yourself, there are also some excellent French Riviera tours that visit several villages in one day. Most of them depart from Nice, so if you’re staying in Menton you’ll simply need to take the train there first.

If you’re planning to visit these villages independently, travelling by train is usually the easiest option. Renting a car also gives you more flexibility if you’re planning to explore several places over a few days.

Day 3 – Relax and Enjoy Menton

If you’re spending three days here, I’d leave the last day completely open to simply enjoy Menton.

One of the reasons I liked it so much is that it doesn’t feel like a place where you constantly have to tick attractions off a list. After exploring the Old Town and visiting nearby villages, this is the day I’d slow down and enjoy everything I didn’t have time for before.

Start with a long breakfast before heading to one of the beaches in Menton. Whether you decide to swim, read a book or simply relax by the sea, it’s the perfect way to spend your final day on the French Riviera.

Around lunchtime, I’d choose one of the restaurants along the seafront, followed by another walk along the promenade or a bit more time at the beach before finishing the afternoon with an aperitif overlooking the Mediterranean.

If you’re looking for something a little different, this is also the perfect day to join a local wine tasting or discover Menton through one of its food tours.

Where to stay: Menton vs Nice

If you’re only following the 1-day Menton itinerary, I’d honestly stay in Nice instead.

That’s exactly what I did, and it makes much more sense if you’re planning to visit several places along the French Riviera. Nice has more hotels, better transport connections and is a much better base for first-time visitors.

If you’re planning to follow the 2 or 3-day Menton itinerary, then I’d definitely stay in Menton itself. It’s much quieter than Nice and perfect if you’re looking for a more relaxing trip with beaches, slower mornings and easy access to nearby villages.

Practical Information

Following this Menton itinerary is very easy because the town is compact and well connected.

Train: The easiest way to reach Menton and visit nearby places like Monaco, Nice or Ventimiglia.

Walking: Most attractions in Menton are within walking distance, so you won’t need public transport once you arrive.

Car: Only really worth it if you’re planning to explore more villages that aren’t as easy to reach by train.

Best season: Spring and summer are ideal if you want to enjoy the beaches, while autumn is great if you prefer fewer crowds.

If I came back to Menton, I’d honestly follow almost the same itinerary again.

I’d spend my first day exploring the Old Town and getting lost in the colorful streets, use another day to visit one of the nearby French Riviera villages, and leave my final day completely free for the beaches, good food and a glass of wine by the sea.

Menton is one of those places where you don’t need to rush from attraction to attraction. The slower you take it, the more you’ll enjoy it—which is probably why it ended up being one of my favorite places on the French Riviera.
