I just spent six months traveling solo around India, and out of everywhere I visited, Kochi was the place I ended up calling home for almost three months.

What you need to know before visiting Kochi

How to get to Kochi

By Plane

The easiest way to get to Kochi is by flying into Cochin International Airport (COK), which is around 1–1.5 hours from Fort Kochi depending on traffic.

I highly recommend pre-booking your airport transfer before arriving, especially if it’s your first time in India. After a long flight, trying to negotiate taxis, figure out transport or deal with airport chaos is the LAST thing you will want to do.

By Train

Kochi is also very easy to reach by train. The main train stations are:

Ernakulam Junction (South)
Ernakulam Town (North)

From there, you can easily reach Fort Kochi by calling for a taxi or auto using the apps Rapido or Uber. The journey is about thirty minutes, again depending on traffic.

By Bus

Buses in India are much better than most people expect and they quickly became my favorite mode of transportation between cities.

Most buses arrive in Ernakulam, and from there you can easily take an auto to Fort Kochi.

Best time to visit Kochi

The best time to visit Kochi is between October and March.
These months are much more pleasant weather-wise — cooler temperatures, less humidity, and no heavy monsoon rain constantly ruining your plans.

December is the busiest month in Kochi, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Fort Kochi becomes FULL of decorations, lights, events and tourists. They even light up one of the biggest Christmas trees in Asia.

But prices also increase A LOT.

I stayed at The Hosteller Fort Kochi Ocean Edge and was paying around €5 a night normally, but during Christmas week prices jumped to around €25 a night for the exact same dorm bed.

So if you’re visiting in December:

book accommodation early
expect more crowds
and expect prices to be much higher than normal

India SIM card vs eSIM

Getting a physical SIM card in India can be quite tricky. At the airport the process is easier, but still tiring and takes a long time. Trying to get it in the city might take you on an exhausting 7h mission like I had in Bangalore because they simply wouldn’t sell it to me due to their crazy requirements and restrictions.

If you are traveling India for a short trip, I’d recommend just getting an eSIM. You can install it before your flight and be immediately connected once you land, saving you time, stress and a possible headache.

Travel insurance for India

Apps to download before traveling to India

To make your life easier while traveling India, here are the most important apps to download before your trip:

Uber – to call for cars and autos to move inside the city
Rapido – same as uber but more local and usually with cheaper prices
RedBus – to book buses and trains when traveling between cities in India
Zomato – food delivery at your door if you get hungry but lazy to go outside.
Instamart – groceries delivery. Perfect if you need something last minute and supermarkets are already closed.

Day 1 – Explore Fort Kochi

Princess street & Bastian street – the most famous streets right in the heart of Fort Kochi, colorful and full of cafes, restaurants and shops. You can find great cafes here for breakfast to start your morning.

Vasco’s house – this is the house where Vasco da Gama lived in during his time in Fort Kochi. Today it’s a heritage homestay and you can actually stay here.

St. Francis church – right next to Vasco’s House and a church that was built by the Portuguese and the site where Vasco da Gama was buried before his body being transported back to Portugal

Santa Cruz Basilica – just a short walk from St. Francis Church and another mandatory visit. This is a huge church with stunning architecture and open for visitors.
Chinese fishing nets – one of the most unique things you can see in Fort Kochi. An ancient fishing technique that is still used today in this part of the world.

Dhobi Khana public laundry – this was one of my favorite experiences in Kochi. Here you get to witness first hand how the old ways of traditional laundry is still kept – handwashing, air drying. And the local workers are really sweet people who seemed genuinely happy to have visitors around.

Mary’s Kitchen – for lunch if you are up to some local Kerala food, this place is a great choice. Simple place but delicious food.
Hop on the water metro – a really cool experience to have while in Kochi is taking the water metro between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam. Tickets are only about 0,5€ and it’s a relaxing, AC, 20 minute journey.

Sunset at the beach – locals gather at Vasco da Gama beach to watch the sky turn orange and it’s a beautiful and peaceful experience.

Kathakali performance with dinner – watch a Kathakali performance with dinner included. This is a very unique and local performance specific to Kerala.

Day 2 – Kerala Backwaters

On your second day exploring Kochi I highly suggest taking a day trip so that your itinerary doesn’t get too packed with city exploring.

So, time to leave the city vibes behind and head for a magical day exploring the Kerala backwaters – got a feeling this will become one of your favorite memories from your trip to Kochi.

Day 3 – Mattancherry & Fort Kochi

Jew town & Paradesi Synagogue

Jew town is another one of my favorites in Kochi. Beautiful area to walk around and check out the several shops for clothes and souvenirs to take home.

Mattancherry Palace

Right next to Jew town so a perfect stop for some culture and history for your morning.

Slow afternoon

Take an auto back to Fort Kochi and if there was something you didn’t get to visit on day 1, fit it here.

I highly suggest using the last few hours in Kochi to take it all in, do some cafe hopping, head to the beach to watch another beautiful sunset by the beach with the locals, check out the several shops to find the perfect gifts to take home.

Best Cafes in Fort Kochi

Kochi has a great cafe scene and you should definitely include a few cafe stops in your Kochi itinerary. Here are some of my favorites:

Kashi Art Cafe — the most popular cafe in Fort Kochi.
Kochi Kapital Kafe — once I found this cafe I became a regular for breakfast.
French Toast Cafe — delicious breakfast/brunch.
Tea Pot Cafe — one of the cutest cafés in Fort Kochi that deserves your visit.
Club House — had quite a few breakfasts in this cafe and would also go here regularly for their beef steak and fish and chips.
Lila – this cafe is STUNNING and food is delicious.

FAQs about visiting Kochi

Is 3 days enough in Kochi?

I think three days in Kochi is the perfect amount of time to spend in this city. One day is definitely too rushed and you will be rushing your way around the city trying to fit everything in a few hours.

Two days in Kochi is also good and obviously better than just a one day trip to Kochi. It’s enough time to see all the main attractions and enjoy Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam, but you will be missing on doing a day trip.

Three days is the perfect time. Exploring the main attractions day 1, taking a backwaters day trip on day 2 and spending day 3 checking out the rest of the attractions, seeing places you missed on day one, and actually having time to do it at a slower Kerala pace and not a rushed pace like in most cities in India.

Is Kochi worth visiting?

Absolutely yes!

I loved Kochi and all the other places I visited in Kerala like Alleppey and Varkala. It was my first stop in India and I completely fell in love with the place and most people who visit have great things to say and love it here.

Can I visit Kochi on a day trip?

Yes, you can visit Kochi on a day trip, but I would say it’s not enough time.

If you only have one day to give to Kochi then definitely do it, as you can see all the major sites in a day, but you’d rushing the whole day and would miss the day trip to the Kerala backwaters which is one of the most beautiful things to do while in Kochi.

Is Kochi safe?

During the three months I spent in Kochi, as a woman traveling India alone, I always felt safe. I truly think Kochi is the best place to travel in India for women traveling alone, and it’s a fantastic introduction to the country.
