Main Itinerary

Morning in Kochi

Breakfast

One day trip to kochi - best cafes in kochi

Start your morning with a full delicious breakfast at Kashi Art Cafe. This place is a mandatory stop while you are in Kochi, and besides the delicious food the cafe is also an art gallery and the place is beautiful.

Fort Kochi has a surprisingly good cafe scene and there are plenty of options to choose from, but Kashi Art Cafe is easily one of the best cafes in Fort Kochi and starting your day here will set the tone for an amazing day ahead of you.

Have your Instagram moment in Princess Street

Princes street fort kochi

Princess street is hands down one of the most beautiful streets in Fort Kochi. It is colorful, photogenic and full of pretty cafes, restaurants and local shops.

Right in the heart of Fort Kochi, and conveniently right next to Kashi Art Cafe where you just had breakfast, Princess street is the perfect first stop. And being the most famous street in Fort Kochi, visiting in the early morning is the best time to avoid the crowds.

Stroll Bastian Street

Not as impressive as Princess street but right next to it, so you will walk Bastian street even without realizing it. It is a cool little obvious add-on to your morning Kochi itinerary.

Vasco da Gama House

Yes, the Portuguese Vasco da Gama you are thinking about!

Vasco da Gama became the first European to reach India by sea, first arriving in Calicut, Kerala, in 1498 and later settling in Kochi where he passed away due to malaria.

The house where he lives in Kochi is still standing today and it is now a heritage homestay and you can actually stay there for accommodation. How cool is that?

St. Francis Church

st. Francis church in fort kochi

Just a short one minute walk from Vasco’s House you will find St. Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India, built by the Portuguese in 1503.

The church is free to visit and honestly and easy add-on to your morning itinerary in Kochi. St. Francis Church is now known because it was where Vasco da Gama was buried, before his body was transported back to Portugal.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica

Santa Cruz basílica fort kochi

Another mandatory stop for your morning exploration of Fort Kochi. Unlike the simple St. Francis Church, Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is impressive to say the least.

See the Chinese Fishing Nets

Chinese fishing nets in fort kochi

The Chinese fishing nets are one of the most unique things you can see in Fort Kochi. If you are looking for a local experience instead of just checking out the main tourist attractions, this is an easy pick to have a little taste of local life.

End your morning at the Dhabi Khana Public laundry

I can’t recommend this place enough. At Dhabi Khana public laundry you will get to see first hand an entire laundry system that still holds the old way traditions. No machines, just hard working people. You can see the entire process from handwashing, air drying and ironing. And the local workers are incredibly kind and happy to have you around. You can clearly see it is really hard work but it is so refreshing to see people doing their job with such pride and smiles on their faces.

It is lunch time!

Where to eat: Mary’s Kitchen

Now that you covered the main spots in Fort Kochi it is time for your lunch break and to try some traditional Kerala food.

I highly recommend having a local lunch at Mary’s Kitchen and enjoy a delicious meal here. Use it as a break from all the exploring and don’t rush. Remember one of the absolute best things about Kerala is that it teaches you how to slow down, specially in India where everything always feel rushed

Afternoon Itinerary

Mattancherry Spice Market

After lunch hop on an auto to escape walking in the heat and head to Mattancherry.

Stop first at the spice market and embrace the local life. Streets full of color, vendors and a small taste of India’s chaos, but a controlled one that you can actually enjoy without feeling overwhelmed. It is also a great place to buy spices if you are looking to take some home.

Mattancherry Palace

From the spice market head to Mattancherry Palace to include some culture and a museum in your itinerary.

I didn’t visit this place myself since I’m not really a museum kind of girl, but everyone in Kochi recommends this place, so I’m adding it here and you can decide for yourself if you want to visit or not.

Jew Town & Paradesi Synagogue

Jew Town will take you back in time with its picturesque streets. It’s a perfect place for an afternoon stroll and you will get some beautiful photos for the memories here. And if you are looking for fro buy some souvenirs to take home, Jew Town has great shops at really good prices.

And tucked in one of its alleys you will also find the Paradesi Synagogue that you should definitely visit.

Go on a little Auto Adventure

One day trip to kochi

From Jew Town take an auto to high court.

Auto rides in India are an adventure and a great way to experience the traffic chaos the country is known for. Fort Kochi is fairly calm, but the other side of the river is where you can experience the crazy pace of India. So, take the auto journey of maybe thirty minutes and enjoy the chaos.

Take the water metro

fort kochi water metro

From High Court take the water metro back to Fort Kochi as the sun is starting to set. This is a twenty minute peaceful AC journey across the river that will cost you only 60 INR and such a unique experience.

Sunset

Get yourself a chai at one of the local stalls just outside the water metro station and then take the Beach Walkaway for sunset.

At this time you will see locals doing the same thing as most people gather in this area for sunset. The place really comes to live but still feels peaceful.
sit at Vasco da Gama Beach and enjoy a beautiful orange sunset and take a moment to relax from the packed exploring day you just had.

Evening

Dinner

After an entire day of exploring how about a yummy dinner with an ocean view? Head to Seagull, a stunning restaurant just by the water that offers delicious food and a perfect dinner setting.

End the night with a drink

One day trip to kochi - Cochin fort

No one day trip to Kochi is complete without a drink with friends or with your partner.

Once you leave Seagull head to Cochin Fort, the most popular bar in Fort Kochi. This is not a party bar, but mostly a social place with music. It is the perfect spot to end the night – and I can vouch for it since I’m not a party girl or even a go out at night girl at all, and still Cochin Fort was my place every night for about a month.

Is one day in Kochi enough?

If one day trip to Kochi is all you can squeeze then you can definitely see all the best places as I just showed you in this itinerary. Is it enough? I would say no.

One day is a really rushed pace to visit Kochi. Actually, it is rushed to visit any place in the world unless your goal is to just tick off the main tourist attractions.

Yes, Kochi is small, but is is also not a place to rush, specially when Kerala is known for its slow pace and that is part of its beauty.

So, is one day in Kochi enough? I don’t think so, ideally I would say three days in Kochi is the perfect spot as you would have time to actually enjoy without running around and it would also give you time to take a cool day trip to Alleppey and a Houseboat in the beautiful backwaters of Kerala.

Practical information

Where to stay in Kochi

When choosing your accommodation it is important that you choose Fort Kochi and not Mattancherry or Ernakulam. This will allow you to walk everywhere and avoid any extra transport logistics in an already packed day.

Here are some places I would stay:

The Hosteller Fort Kochi Ocean Edge

Dutch Manor Boutique

Fragrant Nature Kochi

• Forte Kochi

How to get around Kochi

For this one day trip to Kochi itinerary you will mostly walk, but autos (Tuktuks) will be your best friends to cover slightly longer distances.

To take an auto you can flag them in the street, but I highly recommend installing the apps Rapido and Uber and use these to call for an auto – fixed price, no hassle, no scams.

Payments

One day trip to kochi

Kochi is very tourist friendly and that means payments are pretty straight forward and no need for UPI here. In most restaurants and cafes visa/mastercard are accepted. Everywhere else make sure you have some cash with you.

• For auto rides you should have smaller bills as they rarely have change to give back

Sim Card in India

Local SIM cards in India have become a bit of a challenge for foreigners to get unless you get one at the airport.

I suggest getting an eSIM and saving yourself the headache of trying to get a physical SIM card – in Bangalore it took me seven hours to get one! I would only suggest a physical card if you are traveling India on a longer trip.

Kerala backwaters

Best time to visit Kochi

The best time to visit Kochi is definitely October to March. This will give you the best weather, less chances of rain, lower humidity and great warm temperatures – but not extremely hot.

December is a very popular month in Kochi due to Christmas celebrations, but it also gets really crowded and accommodation prices skyrocket – my $5 a night hostel dorm jumped to $25 a night on Christmas week.

What to wear in Kochi (as a woman)

Kochi, and all Kerala in general, is really relaxed in terms of what you can or what you should wear.

I spent three months in Fort Kochi and I always felt comfortable and safe to wear my western clothes like tops, shorts and dresses. Just make sure you carry a scarf with you if you are planning on visiting religious sites like churches and temples.

Beaches in Kochi

Kochi is not a beach destination – if that is what you are looking for I suggest Varkala instead. The closest you will get to a beach (and not a lay your towel, put on a bikini kind of beach) in Kochi is probably Cherai beach.

Mosquito repellent is your bestfriend in Kochi

Mosquitos in Kerala are relentless. Make sure you buy mosquito repellent as soon as you arrive – not a western one you bring from home. Actually buy a local one. They are cheap and work much better than anything you bring from the west.

FAQs about One day trip to Kochi

Is Kochi worth visiting?

100% yes. I spent three months in Fort Kochi and fell in love with this place and highly recommend it to anyone planning to visit India.

What is Kochi known for?

I would say Kochi is famous for its slow pace, calm, nature and its people. It is not a place with super popular tourist attractions, but a place that has its own energy and charm, and that it’s the perfect ending place to an India trip if you visited other places in the country as well.

Should I start my India trip in Kochi?

Yes and no. Let me explain.

Kochi is 100% the best place to start if you are new to India. It is safer, more tourist friendly, and starting here means you will skip the instant culture shock when arriving in India.

But starting in Kochi and in Kerala also means that if you are planning to head north you are basically going from calm to chaos and you will end up your trip on high chaos and high overstimulation. Plus, once you visit Kerala you will be comparing all other places in India to it. This is what happened to me and honestly I didn’t even want to go to other places anymore after Kerala.

So, if you want an itinerary that makes sense and it goes from hard level to consistently easier and calmer: start in Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, make your way down the coast through Mumbai, Goa, Gokarna, and end in Kerala.

How to get from Kochi airport to Fort Kochi

The airport is quite far from Fort Kochi and the journey will take at least one hour – usually longer because of traffic.

I suggest booking an airport transfer for a smooth arrival and to have a pick-up arranged that will take you straight to thud accommodation.

Is Kochi safe for women traveling alone?

For the three months I spent in Fort Kochi I always felt safe as a solo female traveler. Make sure you obviously use common sense, stay in Fort Kochi area for accommodation, make sure you have a travel insurance in case something happens, and always have mobile data for whenever you go outside on your own.

Best Hostels in Kochi

For hostels in Fort Kochi I only recommend staying at the Hosteller Fort Kochi Ocean Edge. Definitely the best hostel in the area.

If you are staying in Ernakulam instead of Fort Kochi, then Zostel is the only place I would recommend for hostel accommodation in Ernakulam.

Final thoughts

Kochi definitely belongs in your India itinerary and I am sure you will fall in love with it the same way I did.

I hope this itinerary for a one day trip to Kochi helped you decide how to spend your time in this beautiful place.
