Best time to visit Porto: My Quick Answer
- Overall best: May–June & September
- Cheapest: November–March
- Best weather: June–September
- Fewest crowds: Spring & Autumn
- Best for local festivals: June
Porto Weather Throughout The Year

Porto has four very distinct seasons, so the experience of visiting the city can be completely different depending on the time of year. Summers are generally hot and sunny, while winters tend to be much cooler, wetter, and greyer.
Unlike southern Portugal, Porto gets quite a bit of rain throughout the year, especially between late autumn and early spring. If you’re hoping for warm weather and blue skies, summer is definitely your safest bet.
| Season | Average Temperature | What to Expect |
| Spring | 12-20°C | Mild weather, occasional rain, fewer crowds |
| Summer | 18-30°C | Hot, sunny, busiest season |
| Autumn | 13-24°C | Pleasant temperatures, more rain, less crowds |
| Winter | 6-15°C | Cool, rainy, cheapest time to visit |

Visiting Porto In Spring
(March–May)
Spring is a really nice time to visit Porto if you don’t mind the occasional rainy day. Temperatures are comfortable for walking around the city all day, everything starts blooming again, and there are noticeably fewer tourists compared to summer.
If you’re looking for a quieter trip but still want decent weather, spring is a great option.
Pros
- Pleasant temperatures
- Fewer tourists
- Great for walking around the city
- Flowers and greener parks
Cons
- Rain is still common
- Weather can change quickly
Best for
- First-time visitors
- City breaks
- Sightseeing without summer crowds
Visiting Porto In Summer
(June–August)
Summer is easily my favorite time to visit Porto. The days are long, the weather is hot, and the whole city just feels much more alive. It’s the perfect time to spend the day walking around, having dinner outside, taking a Douro River cruise, or even doing a day trip to one of the nearby beaches.
The only downside is that summer is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit Porto. If you’re planning to travel between July and August, I’d recommend booking your accommodation in advance.
Pros
- Sunny weather
- Long daylight hours
- Festivals and events
- Perfect for river cruises and day trips
Cons
- Peak tourist season
- More expensive accommodation
- Can get very hot in July and August
Best for
- First-time visitors
- Good weather
- Festivals
- Day trips and nearby beaches

Visiting Porto In Autumn
(September–November)
September is probably the best month to visit Porto if you don’t want the summer crowds anymore but still want good weather. October is also a nice month, but that’s when you start risking more rain, especially towards the end of the month.
Pros
- Still warm, especially in September
- Fewer crowds than summer
- Beautiful autumn colours
- Better accommodation prices than peak season
Cons
- Rain becomes more common from late October
- Cooler evenings as winter approaches
Best for
- Good weather without peak crowds (especially September)
- Slower city breaks
- Lower accommodation prices than summer

Visiting Porto In Winter
(December–February)
If you’re traveling on a budget, winter is definitely the cheapest time to visit Porto. Hotel prices are usually much lower than during summer, and you’ll also avoid the large tourist crowds.
If you visit in December, you’ll also get to see the Christmas lights and decorations around the city, which make Porto feel really cozy.
The downside is the weather. Winter in Porto is usually cold, grey, and quite rainy. Personally, this wouldn’t be my choice because I prefer warm destinations, but if you enjoy winter city breaks and don’t mind wearing a jacket every day, you might actually enjoy visiting Porto during this time of year.
Pros
- Cheapest accommodation prices
- Fewer tourists
- Christmas lights and decorations in December
Cons
- Cold weather
- Frequent rain
- Shorter daylight hours
Best for
- Budget travelers
- Christmas markets and decorations
- People who don’t mind cold and rainy weather

Cheapest Time To Visit Porto
The cheapest time to visit Porto is definitely winter, from November to March. Tourism drops during these months because of the colder temperatures and frequent rain, which means flights and accommodation are usually much cheaper than during the rest of the year.
December can be a bit different. Although hotel prices are still generally lower than in summer, flights to and from Portugal often become more expensive because many Portuguese people living abroad return home for Christmas and New Year.
If you’re looking for a budget trip and don’t mind colder weather and rainy days, winter can actually be a great time to visit Porto.
Best Time To Visit Porto For…
- Good weather: June to September.
- Budget travelers: October. Summer crowds are gone, accommodation prices usually start dropping, and the weather is still pleasant.
- Avoiding crowds: May and October. These are great months if you want warm weather without the peak summer crowds.
- Festivals: June. If you visit in June, you’ll get to experience Festas de São João do Porto, the city’s biggest celebration. It’s one of the best times to visit Porto, with concerts, fireworks, street parties, and thousands of people celebrating all night. I highly recommend visiting during this festival if you get the chance.
My Personal Recommendation
Every traveler is different, and so are the four seasons in Porto. Personally, I prefer traveling somewhere warm and sunny, so I’d definitely choose summer, followed by spring and autumn. I’d probably avoid visiting Porto in winter, simply because I’m not a fan of cold weather, grey skies, or constant rain. But if you enjoy cozy winter trips and don’t mind cooler temperatures, then Porto is a destination you can honestly visit any time of the year.
Planning Your Trip To Porto

- Luxury: Torel Avantgarde
Stay Connected
Having mobile data makes traveling around Porto much easier, especially for Google Maps and ordering Uber or Bolt. You can either buy a local SIM card or install an eSIM before arriving.
Travel Insurance
Portugal is generally very safe, but travel insurance is something I never travel without. If something unexpected happens, it’s always better to know you’re covered.

How to Get To Porto
Getting to Porto is very easy. If you’re arriving from another country, you can fly directly into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, which has connections to many European destinations. If you’re already in Portugal, the easiest way to travel from Lisbon to Porto is by train, although buses are usually the cheapest option if you’re traveling on a budget. I usually compare prices beforehand because sometimes buses can be significantly cheaper than trains, especially during high season.

FAQs
What is the rainiest month in Porto?
Porto’s weather outside of summer can be very unpredictable. It is generally much rainier and colder than Lisbon or the Algarve region in southern Portugal. While you can experience rainy days anytime between November and April, December to February are usually the rainiest months in Porto.
What is the rainiest month in Porto?
This really comes down to personal preference. Personally, I wouldn’t choose to travel somewhere that’s cold or constantly raining. That’s why I usually leave Europe during winter and fly somewhere warmer instead.
However, if you enjoy cozy winter trips and don’t mind colder temperatures or rain, then Porto can definitely still be worth visiting in winter.
What is the hottest month in Porto?
August is usually the hottest month in Porto, although July is also very warm. If you’re looking for hot, sunny weather, these are the best months to visit.
Is Porto crowded in the summer?
Porto does get busier during the summer months, but it still feels less crowded than Lisbon or many other major European cities.
You’ll notice the biggest crowds around Ribeira, São Bento Station, and the main tourist attractions, but overall I still think summer is one of the best times to visit Porto.
How many days should you spend in Porto?
This also depends on the kind of traveler you are, but I think two days is the absolute minimum to experience Porto properly.
One day feels too rushed and you’ll barely scratch the surface. Two days gives you enough time to visit the main attractions, while three to four days is the sweet spot if you want to explore at a slower pace, try different restaurants, take a day trip, and really enjoy the city without rushing from one attraction to another.
Final Thoughts on Best Time to Visit Porto
There isn’t really a bad time to visit Porto. Every season offers something different, but if you’re looking for the best balance between weather, prices and crowds, I’d personally choose late spring or early autumn.
