It’s right by Trindade Metro Station, which is a big plus if you’re going to be using public transport to get around Porto. You’re also close enough to walk to plenty of the city’s main sights, so you don’t have to spend your entire trip figuring out transportation.

If you’re going to be out exploring Porto all day anyway, I’d rather save the money on the hotel and spend it on actually doing things in the city.

The location on Rua de Santa Catarina is a big reason I’d consider it. You’re right in the middle of Porto, with shops, restaurants, cafés, and plenty of the city’s sights around you.

I also like that it has a bit more personality than a generic chain hotel. If I’m paying for a hotel rather than staying in a hostel, I want it to feel like I’m actually somewhere.

The hotel itself dates back to the 19th century, which gives it a completely different feel from a modern hotel that could be anywhere.

You’re paying for the location as much as the hotel itself. And in Porto, being right by the Douro is a pretty damn good location to have.

GA Palace Hotel & Spa is for when you actually want to enjoy the hotel, rather than just use it as somewhere to sleep.

The property is set inside a 19th-century villa, so you’re getting the historic Porto atmosphere along with the 5-star facilities. There’s a spa, pools, fitness facilities, restaurants, and plenty of places to actually hang out.

If you’re booking a luxury hotel, this is the kind of place where I think the extra money makes more sense because there’s actually a lot to experience on the property.

Timbre Virtudes

Timbre Virtudes is probably my favorite kind of luxury hotel: one that doesn’t feel like it could be anywhere in the world.

So you’re getting the luxury, but you’re also getting Porto. And if I’m spending this much on a hotel, that’s exactly what I want.

There are also views over the city and river, plus a rooftop bar and restaurant.

Where to Stay in Porto

Where you stay in Porto can make a pretty big difference depending on what kind of trip you’re having.

Baixa and the historic center are probably the easiest choices for a first trip. You’re close to the main attractions, restaurants, shops, and nightlife, and you can spend most of your time exploring on foot.

Ribeira is where I’d look if you want that classic Porto postcard setting. You’re right by the Douro and the colorful waterfront, although you’ll generally pay more for the location.

Trindade is a really practical option if you’re more interested in getting around easily. The metro connections are excellent, and you’re still close enough to the center that you don’t feel like you’re staying miles away from everything.

Miragaia is a good choice if you want something a little quieter and more atmospheric. You’re still close to the river and historic center, but you’re away from some of the busiest parts of central Porto. This is also where you’ll find Timbre Virtudes.
