The 7 Best Food Tours in Vienna, Austria

Food was definitely not the main focus of either of my trips to Vienna, and looking back, I think I missed quite a lot because of that. I knew about schnitzel, Austrian pastries and Vienna’s famous coffee culture, but I wasn’t exactly going around trying to figure out what local dishes I needed to eat or where I should try them.

That’s where I think booking a food tour can actually be useful, especially if you only have a couple of days in Vienna. Instead of randomly picking restaurants and ordering whatever you recognize on the menu, you can try several different things and actually learn a bit about Austrian food at the same time.

I’ve picked 7 of the best food tours in Vienna, from full Austrian meals and tours with multiple tastings to coffee, street food and Naschmarkt tours. I’ve also included one Austrian dining experience at the end for anyone who would rather sit down for a proper meal than do a walking food tour.

The 7 Best Food Tours in Vienna

Vienna Food and Coffee Tour: Market, Lunch & Street Food

This would be my first choice if I wanted to book just one food tour in Vienna.

Rather than focusing on one restaurant or one type of Austrian food, this tour combines a market, lunch, street food and Vienna’s coffee culture. I think that gives you a much better introduction if it’s your first time in the city and you want to try a bit of everything.

It’s also the top-rated food tour out of these options, which would make me lean toward it even more if I was choosing between several tours that all looked good.

I’d especially choose this over one of the Naschmarkt-only tours if you want to discover more than just the market.

Best for: First-time visitors, coffee, street food and trying a mix of things

Vienna: The Ultimate Full Meal Austrian Food Tour

If the main reason you’re booking a food tour is because you want to try proper Austrian food, I’d look at this one.

The big difference is right there in the name: full meal. So rather than choosing a tour where the focus is mostly small tastings, this makes more sense if you actually want to eat and make the tour one of your main meals of the day.

I’d choose this over the food and coffee tour if traditional Austrian food is more important to you than getting a broader mix of markets, coffee and street food.

And please do not eat a massive lunch immediately before booking something called the Ultimate Full Meal Austrian Food Tour. That feels like a problem you can easily avoid.

Best for: Traditional Austrian food, a full meal and hungry people

Vienna: Food Tour with 5+ Stops, Food Tastings & Secret Dish

If you want to try lots of different things, this would be the one I’d compare with the food and coffee tour.

You’re visiting more than five stops rather than basing the experience around one place, which is much closer to what I personally want from a food tour. If I’m doing one, I want to finish it having tried several foods and hopefully discovered something I wouldn’t have ordered myself.

There’s also a secret dish included, so you won’t know absolutely everything you’re getting before the tour.

I’d choose this if number and variety of tastings matter more to you than specifically visiting Naschmarkt or focusing on Vienna’s coffee culture.

Best for: Multiple stops, lots of tastings and variety

Vienna: Naschmarkt Food Tasting Tour

If Naschmarkt is already on your Vienna itinerary, this is where the decision gets easier.

Instead of visiting the market separately and then booking another food tour somewhere else, you can combine the two and actually try food while you’re there.

I know myself well enough to know that I can walk through an entire market, look at 500 different things, have absolutely no idea what I should try and somehow leave having eaten nothing. Having someone actually take you to the stops and explain what you’re trying fixes that problem pretty quickly.

I wouldn’t choose this over the broader tours if you want an introduction to food across Vienna, though. The reason to pick this one is specifically because you want the Naschmarkt experience.

Best for: Naschmarkt, food markets and combining sightseeing with tastings

Vienna: Best of Vienna Food Tour

This is the option I’d look at if you don’t particularly care about having a specific theme and simply want a food tour around Vienna.

Not everyone needs their tour to be specifically about coffee or markets. If your main goal is to try local food and get an introduction to what people actually eat in Vienna, a more general tour can make more sense.

I’d probably choose one of the more specific options above personally, simply because I like knowing what makes one tour different from another. But if you’re looking for a straightforward Vienna food tour, this is the one I’d compare with them.

Best for: A general introduction to Vienna’s food and first-time visitors

Vienna: Naschmarkt Guided Food Tour

This is the second Naschmarkt option, and realistically, you don’t need to do both.

I’d compare this directly with the Naschmarkt Food Tasting Tour and choose whichever works better for your dates and the type of experience you want.

The main reason to choose either of them over the broader Vienna food tours is the same: you already want to visit Naschmarkt and would rather experience it with someone showing you what to try than just wander around by yourself.

If the market isn’t particularly important to you, I’d go with one of the first three tours instead.

Best for: Naschmarkt and travelers specifically looking for a guided market food tour

Vienna: Austrian Culinary Experience at Restaurant Stefanie

Okay, this isn’t really a food tour, which is why I’ve put it last.

You’re not choosing this because you want to walk around Vienna trying food at different stops. This is for someone who wants to sit down and have an Austrian culinary experience at Restaurant Stefanie instead.

And I think that’s actually useful to include because maybe you’ve landed on this post looking for a food experience but don’t particularly want to spend hours walking around on a tour.

I’d choose one of the other six if your priority is discovering different foods and places around Vienna. But if you want to make dinner itself the experience, this is the completely different option on the list.

Best for: A sit-down Austrian food experience and anyone who doesn’t want a walking food tour

Which Food Tour in Vienna Should You Choose?

If you want me to make the decision easy, I’d choose the Vienna Food and Coffee Tour: Market, Lunch & Street Food. It’s the top-rated option here and I like that you’re getting several different parts of Vienna’s food culture rather than focusing on only one thing.

If your priority is traditional Austrian food and a proper meal, choose the Ultimate Full Meal Austrian Food Tour.

If you want to try as many different things as possible, I’d look at the Food Tour with 5+ Stops, Food Tastings & Secret Dish.

And if Naschmarkt is already somewhere you know you want to visit, choose one of the two market tours and do both things at the same time.

The Restaurant Stefanie experience is the odd one out. I’d only choose that over the actual food tours if you specifically want a sit-down dining experience.

Best Food Tours in Vienna: Final Thoughts

Out of all these food tours in Vienna, the Vienna Food and Coffee Tour: Market, Lunch & Street Food would be my pick. It gives you the mix I would want from a first food tour in the city, and it’s also the top-rated option from this list.

The Ultimate Full Meal Austrian Food Tour makes more sense if your priority is sitting down to a proper amount of Austrian food, while the 5+ Stops Food Tour would be my choice if I wanted as many different tastings as possible.

And if you’re already planning to visit Naschmarkt, I would absolutely consider combining that with one of the food tours rather than visiting the market separately.

I definitely paid far less attention to food than I should have on my Vienna trips. If I end up giving the city a third chance, maybe eating my way around it will finally change my opinion.
