Vienna Solo Travel: What to Know Before Your Trip

Vienna is an easy city for solo travel. It has good public transportation, plenty of hostels, and you can explore the city without needing a car or anyone else with you.

My first trip to Vienna was during a three-month solo backpacking trip around Europe. I was traveling on a very tight budget, it was freezing cold, and honestly, I didn’t like Vienna much at the time.

Vienna can also be an expensive city when you’re backpacking. A lot of the main things to do are museums, palaces, concerts and other paid attractions, and I simply didn’t have the budget for them. I mostly spent my time walking around the city and seeing whatever I could for free.

I also stayed in a pretty terrible hostel that didn’t even have Wi-Fi, although I did meet other travelers there.

Looking back, I think I would have had a completely different experience if I had visited Vienna during summer and had enough money to actually do more while I was there.

Is Vienna Good for Solo Travel?

Yes. Even though I didn’t love Vienna on my first trip, traveling solo wasn’t the reason.

The city is easy to explore by yourself, public transportation is straightforward, and you don’t need a travel partner to visit any of the main attractions.

Vienna is also a common stop on longer trips around Central Europe, so you’ll find plenty of other solo travelers and backpackers staying in hostels.

For me, the biggest problems were my budget and the weather. I was cold, broke and in a city where many of the things I could have done required paying an entrance fee.

If I went back now, I would definitely visit during summer instead.

My Experience with Solo Travel in Vienna

I spent around three days in Vienna on my first trip. I arrived by train from Bratislava after traveling through Budapest earlier on the same backpacking trip.

I don’t remember the name of the hostel anymore, and I haven’t been able to find it online, so I don’t think it even exists now. What I do remember is that it wasn’t good and didn’t even have Wi-Fi.

I still met people there, though, which was one of the best things about staying in hostels while traveling solo around Europe.

I didn’t have much of a sightseeing budget in Vienna, so I mostly walked.

There wasn’t some carefully planned itinerary behind it. I would leave the hostel, walk around the city and see where I ended up. I probably walked past plenty of famous buildings without even knowing what they were at the time.

That’s just how I traveled on that trip. I had three months of Europe to pay for, so spending money on museum and palace tickets in every city wasn’t happening.

Is Vienna safe for solo travelers?

I didn’t have any problems with safety while traveling solo in Vienna.

I felt comfortable exploring the city by myself and using public transportation. I’d still take the same normal precautions I would anywhere else, but safety wouldn’t be a reason for me not to return to Vienna solo.

Where to stay for solo travel in Vienna

If you want to meet people while traveling solo, staying in a hostel is one of the easiest ways to do it.

My hostel wasn’t good enough for me to recommend it even if it still existed, but I did meet other travelers there.

If you don’t care about meeting people, there’s no reason you need to stay in a hostel just because you’re traveling solo. A hotel or private room works just as well.

I’d focus more on staying somewhere with easy access to public transportation so you can get around Vienna without wasting too much time.

Getting around Vienna as a solo traveler

Vienna is easy to get around without a car.

You have the U-Bahn, trams and buses for longer distances, and you can also see a lot simply by walking.

I walked a ridiculous amount during my trip because it was free and I was trying to spend as little money as possible. It also meant I saw a lot of the city without needing to plan much.

Things to do during a solo trip to Vienna

Most things to do in Vienna work just as well when you’re traveling solo.

You can visit the museums and palaces, explore the city center, go to the markets, join a walking tour or book one of Vienna’s classical music concerts.

I skipped most of the paid attractions on my first trip because I couldn’t justify spending money on them with the budget I had.

If I visited now, I’d still spend plenty of time exploring outside, but I’d choose a few experiences that I actually wanted to pay for instead of automatically skipping everything with an entrance fee.

Is Vienna expensive for solo travel?

This was one of the things I disliked most about Vienna during my backpacking trip.

I was trying to make my money last for three months around Europe, and Vienna wasn’t an easy place to do that.

Traveling solo also means you don’t have someone to split the cost of private accommodation or taxis with. Staying in a hostel, using public transportation and choosing which attractions are actually worth paying for can make a big difference.

If you’re traveling on a tight budget like I was, I wouldn’t try to do every paid attraction in Vienna. Decide what you actually care about and spend your money on those.

How to meet people while traveling solo in Vienna

Hostels are probably the easiest option.

Even though I didn’t like the hostel I stayed in, I still met other travelers there.

Walking tours and group activities are another option if you want to meet people but don’t want to sleep in a dorm.

And you don’t have to spend your solo trip trying to make friends either. If you want to explore Vienna by yourself, you can.

Getting to Vienna as a solo traveler

I traveled to Vienna by train from Bratislava, which made Vienna an easy next stop on my backpacking route.

Vienna is well connected with other cities in this part of Europe, so you can also travel by train or bus from places like Budapest and Prague.

How many days do you need for a solo trip to Vienna?

I spent around three days in Vienna, and I think that’s a good amount of time for a first trip.

You could see the main parts of the city in less time, while someone planning to visit several museums and palaces could easily stay longer.

Would I recommend Vienna for solo travel?

Yes, although I would do my own Vienna trip very differently now.

I wouldn’t go during cold weather again, and I wouldn’t visit with such a tiny budget that I had to automatically rule out almost everything that cost money.

Vienna still isn’t one of my favorite cities in Europe, and I’m not going to pretend it is just because I’m writing a travel guide about it.

But that has nothing to do with solo travel.

I found Vienna easy to explore by myself, I met other travelers at my hostel, and I never felt like I needed someone with me to experience the city.

If I returned now, I’d go during summer, give myself a better budget and actually choose a few things I wanted to do.

Final Thoughts on Vienna Solo Travel

Vienna wasn’t one of my favorite stops during my solo backpacking trip around Europe, but I don’t think that had anything to do with traveling alone.

I was on a very tight budget, it was freezing cold, and I wasn’t interested in spending what little money I had on museums and palaces. If I went back now, I’d visit in summer, have a bigger budget and probably have a completely different experience.

For solo travel, Vienna itself is easy. You can get around without a car, explore independently, stay in a hostel if you want to meet people and easily continue your trip to other cities around Central Europe.

So while Vienna still isn’t one of my favorite European cities, I wouldn’t hesitate to travel there solo again.
