Yes, I thought Menton was very safe.

Out of all the places I’ve visited on the French Riviera, Menton was actually the one where I felt the safest. I spent a few hours walking around the town on my own, explored the Old Town, got lost a couple of times, walked through quiet streets, and never felt uncomfortable.

Of course, every traveler has a different experience and no destination is 100% risk-free. But based on my visit, I’d happily recommend Menton to solo female travelers and wouldn’t hesitate to visit again on my own.

My Experience Visiting Menton Alone

I visited Menton on a day trip from Nice and arrived by train early in the afternoon. From the station, I simply started walking towards the Old Town without really having much of a plan.

Like always, I ended up getting lost a few times. I walked through small streets, climbed staircases that seemed to lead nowhere, and somehow always found another nice viewpoint or colorful corner. At one point I even found myself in streets where there was barely anyone around, but I never felt unsafe.

The whole town felt very relaxed. There were tourists around the waterfront and Old Town, locals going about their day, people having lunch outside, and the atmosphere was much calmer than I expected.

Since I was only there for a few hours during the day, I can’t say what Menton feels like late at night. But based on my experience, walking around alone during the afternoon felt completely comfortable, even when I wandered away from the busiest areas.

Is Menton Safe During the Day?

From my experience, yes.

I spent the entire afternoon walking around Menton on my own and never felt uncomfortable. The Old Town, seafront and main streets were busy with both tourists and locals, so there were always people around without the town feeling crowded.

Even when I accidentally wandered into quieter streets, I never had the feeling that I needed to leave or that I wasn’t safe. Overall, Menton felt like a very relaxed place to explore during the day.

Is Menton Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

From what I experienced as a solo female traveler myself, yes.

I visited Menton on my own and had no problems at all. I walked everywhere, got lost more than once, explored small streets and viewpoints, and never felt like anyone was bothering me or paying much attention to me.

I actually felt safer in Menton than I did in Nice or Paris. Of course, every trip is different, and basic common sense still applies, but if you’re thinking about visiting Menton as a solo female traveler, I personally wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Even though I thought Menton felt very safe, it’s still worth taking the usual precautions you would anywhere else.

Like in most tourist destinations, pickpockets can sometimes be around in busy areas, so keep an eye on your belongings, especially around the train station or if you’re visiting during the summer when the town gets much busier.

If you’re planning to stay out after dark, just use the same common sense you would anywhere else. Stick to the main streets, avoid carrying valuables on display, and stay aware of your surroundings. I didn’t experience any problems during my visit, but it’s always better to be cautious than careless.

How to get to Menton safely

The easiest way to get to Menton is by train from Nice. That’s exactly what I did, and I found it to be simple, affordable and much less stressful than driving, especially if you’re only visiting for the day.

If you’re planning to explore more of the French Riviera, renting a car can also be a good option. It gives you the flexibility to visit smaller towns like Èze, Villefranche-sur-Mer or Antibes without depending on train schedules.
