Instead, I ended up staying almost 3 months.
And after spending that much time there, I realized really quickly that choosing where to stay completely changes your experience of the city. Some areas feel chaotic and practical, while others feel much slower, more walkable and actually enjoyable to stay in long term.
So if you’re looking for the best hotels in Kochi, where to stay in Fort Kochi, or which area fits your travel style best, this guide breaks down exactly where to stay depending on your budget, travel style and what kind of Kochi experience you actually want.

My Quick Answer: where to stay in Kochi
If it’s your first time visiting Kochi, my quick answer is simple:
stay in Fort Kochi.
That’s where I stayed myself for most of the 3 months I lived in Kochi, and I think it’s the best area for first-time visitors.
Fort Kochi is more walkable, has the best cafés and restaurants, easier logistics, and overall feels much easier for first-time visitors and solo travelers compared to staying in Ernakulam.
My Tips before booking accommodation in Kochi
Before booking accommodation in Kochi, there are a few things I REALLY wish I knew before arriving.
First: do not underestimate the humidity. Kerala heat feels very different and after walking around all day, having AC becomes the difference between sleeping properly or suffering the entire night.
I also wouldn’t stay too far from Fort Kochi unless you genuinely want a more local city experience. On paper, staying in Ernakulam can seem cheaper or “more practical,” but constantly depending on transport every day becomes exhausting really quickly.
The ferries and water metro are cool at first, but using them daily gets annoying fast if you’re constantly moving back and forth between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi.
Same with autos. They’re cheap compared to Europe, but after weeks in India, negotiating rides and sitting in traffic all the time becomes mentally draining.
And if you work remotely, prioritize good wifi over literally everything else. Some accommodations in Kochi have amazing internet… and some barely load Google Maps.

Fort Kochi (Best for first-time visitors)
If it’s your first time visiting Kochi, this is where I’d stay without even thinking twice.
Fort Kochi is where you’ll find most of the cafés, tourist attractions, cute streets, sunset spots and overall the side of Kochi most travelers actually imagine before coming here.
It’s also much more walkable than other parts of the city, which makes a HUGE difference in India. Being able to leave your accommodation and just walk to cafés, restaurants or the waterfront without needing an auto every single time honestly made my daily life so much easier there.
The atmosphere also feels calmer compared to the rest of Kochi. It still feels like India obviously, but it doesn’t feel as overwhelming as bigger Indian cities.
I stayed at The Hosteller Fort Kochi Ocean Edge for a big part of my time there and overall I really liked it. The location was great, the social atmosphere was good without feeling like a crazy party hostel, and being close to the water was honestly one of my favorite parts.

Best places to stay in Fort Kochi
Backpacker
The Hosteller Fort Kochi Ocean Edge
The Hosteller is one of the biggest hostel chains in India and they have hostels pretty much everywhere in the country. This is the hostel I stayed at during my three months in Fort Kochi and I highly recommend it for travelers on a low budget. They have mixed and female shared dorms, as well as private rooms, a huge terrace that is great for meeting other travelers, and the location is right in the heart of Fort Kochi.

Budget
Jasmin Villa

The place has a much more homestay feeling compared to the bigger hotels, and the location is still walking distance from cafés, restaurants and most attractions around Fort Kochi. It’s simple, calm and works well if you don’t care about luxury and just want a comfortable base while exploring Kochi.

The Fort Bungalow
The Fort Bungalow is another really solid budget option if you want to stay in the heart of Fort Kochi without spending too much.

Mid-Range
Abad Dutch Bungalow
This is probably one of the best mid-range hotels in Fort Kochi if you want something comfortable without going full luxury.

Fragrant Nature Kochi
Fragrant Nature feels more upscale while still staying in the mid-range category compared to the big luxury hotels.

Ernakulam (best for local city vibes & short stays)
Ernakulam feels completely different from Fort Kochi.
This is the more modern and local side of Kochi, with shopping malls, office buildings, bigger roads and overall more of a city atmosphere. If you’re arriving by train or only staying one night, Ernakulam can be more practical because you’re much closer to the train station and transport connections.
But at the same time, this is NOT really the “Kochi aesthetic” most people imagine before visiting. You won’t find the cute colonial streets, cafés everywhere, Chinese fishing nets and slower atmosphere that Fort Kochi has.
I think Ernakulam works better for short stays,
people using Kochi as a transport hub, or travelers who prefer a more local city feeling over the touristy Fort Kochi atmosphere.
Best Places to stay in Ernakulam
Backpacker
Zostel Kochi
One of the more social hostel options in Kochi, with dorms, common areas, and regular backpacker energy. Good if you’re traveling alone and want an easier time meeting people. FAQs about visiting Kochi
Is Fort Kochi or Ernakulam better for travelers?
Most travelers will probably enjoy Fort Kochi more. It’s slower, more walkable and has the cafés, colonial streets, besides being the place where you’ll find most of the tourist attractions.
Ernakulam feels more like a modern Indian city with malls, business areas, and better transport connections. It’s more practical, but less charming. I’d skip staying in Ernakulam and look for accommodation in Fort Kochi.
What is the best travel insurance for India?
I personally wouldn’t travel around India without travel insurance, especially if you’re taking domestic flights, long train journeys, scooters, or traveling for several weeks.
For most travelers, I’d recommend SafetyWing because it’s simple to set up online and works well for long-term or flexible trips. It’s also one of the more popular options among backpackers and digital nomads.
How do I get from Kochi airport to Fort Kochi?
The easiest way to get from Kochi Airport to Fort Kochi is by pre-booked airport transfer, especially if you’re arriving late, carrying luggage, or landing in India for the first time.
Uber and taxis are also available, but after a long flight, having a driver already waiting honestly makes the arrival much less stressful. The drive usually takes around 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic.
Is Kochi walkable?
Yes, Fort Kochi is one of the most walkable areas in Kerala. Most cafés, attractions, homestays, and restaurants are relatively close together, and walking around is honestly part of the experience.

Is Kochi expensive for tourists?
Not really. Kochi is one of the more affordable cities for travelers in Kerala, especially compared to many European destinations. Budget travelers can still find cheap guesthouses, local food, ferries, and tuk-tuks without spending much.
Fort Kochi is slightly more expensive than other parts of the city because it’s more tourist-oriented, but it still feels relatively budget-friendly overall.
Should I get a SIM card or eSIM for India?
If your phone supports eSIMs, it’s usually the easiest option because you can set everything up before arriving. Physical SIM cards are often cheaper, but getting one in India can sometimes take longer because of registration requirements.
For shorter trips, an eSIM is usually more convenient. For longer stays, a local SIM may be better value.
How many days do you need in Kochi?
Most travelers only need around 2–4 days in Kochi itself. That’s enough time to explore Fort Kochi without rushing and still take a cool day trip like to the Kerala backwaters.
Is Fort Kochi good for solo travelers?
Yes, specially if you enjoy slower travel, cafés, walkable areas, and a more relaxed atmosphere. It’s one of the easier places in Kerala to travel solo because many guesthouses, hostels, and cafés are used to international travelers.
It’s not a huge party destination, but it’s a comfortable place to slow down and meet other travelers naturally.
Should I stay near Kochi airport?
Unless you have a very early flight, no! Kochi airport is really far away from Fort Kochi and all the main sites, so if you stay at the airport you’ll be wasting a lot of money and time in transportation.

What are the best day trips from Kochi?
Some of the most popular day trips from Kochi include Alleppey for the backwaters, Athirappilly Waterfalls, Cherai Beach, and Munnar if you don’t mind a long drive.
If you only have time for one day trip, I highly suggest the Kerala backwaters because it’s a unique experience, easy day trip and something you can’t miss.
Can women travel solo in Kochi safely?
Kochi is generally considered one of the easier and more relaxed places for solo female travelers in India. Fort Kochi is more tourist-friendly, and less overwhelming than many larger cities

What is the best time to visit Kochi?
Best time to visit Kochi is between November and March to get the best weather, no monsoon so less chances of rain and a more bearable humidity.
Is Kochi better than Alleppey and Varkala?
The three are very different so it really depends on what kind of trip you want. Kochi is better for culture, cafés, city life, and slower travel. Alleppey is more about backwaters and houseboats.
Varkala is more beach-focused, social, and people normally go to Varkala for surfing or yoga retreats. Many travelers actually combine all three places during a Kerala trip because they each offer something different.
Final thoughts
Before coming to Kochi, I really thought I’d stay maybe 4 or 5 days and then move on.
Instead, I ended up staying almost 3 months.
And I think that says everything about Kochi better than any perfect travel guide ever could.
Kochi was the place where India felt less overwhelming to me. It became part of my routine instead of constantly feeling like survival mode every day.
I had my favorite cafés, my usual ferry routes, random sunset walks along the water, and little streets I kept returning to over and over again.
So if it’s your first time visiting Kochi, I really do think choosing the right area changes your entire experience here.
For me, Fort Kochi is still the best place to stay in Kochi, especially if you want the version of Kochi that actually makes people fall in love with the city.
