If you only have one day in Riga, you can see a lot without turning your day into a race between attractions.

I’ve spent more than two months in Riga across three visits, so I’ve had plenty of time to see the city without trying to cram everything into one day. If I were visiting Riga for the first time and only had 24 hours, these are the things I’d prioritize.

I also wouldn’t try to see every museum and historical building in the city. You have one day. You can see the main sights, eat some good food, experience the Old Town, check out Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture, and still have time to enjoy the city.

One Day in Riga: Quick Answer

For one day in Riga, I’d focus on the Old Town, Riga Central Market, Freedom Monument and the Art Nouveau district.

Start in the Old Town and see the main sights there, stop at Central Market for lunch, then walk toward the Freedom Monument and continue to the Art Nouveau district.

In the evening, head back toward the center for dinner and drinks.

That gives you a good first look at Riga without spending your entire day inside museums or following a ridiculous minute-by-minute itinerary.

Start Your Day in Riga Old Town

The Old Town is where I’d start if you only have one day in Riga.

This is one of my favorite parts of the city, and I’ve walked around here countless times during my stays. You can see several of Riga’s main sights without spending half your day traveling between them.

Start around Town Hall Square and the House of the Blackheads, then make your way through the Old Town toward St. Peter’s Church, Riga Cathedral and the Three Brothers.

You can also walk past the Swedish Gate and the Powder Tower if you want to see more of the historic center.

You don’t need to go inside every attraction. If you only have 24 hours in Riga, I’d rather spend the time actually experiencing the Old Town than checking off seven buildings from a list.

The streets themselves are part of what makes this area worth seeing.

Stop at Riga Central Market

After exploring the Old Town, head to Riga Central Market.

I like including the market in a one-day visit because it gives you something different from the historic center. It’s also a good place to stop for lunch rather than wasting time looking for a restaurant somewhere else.

The market is made up of several large former Zeppelin hangars and has stalls selling everything from fresh produce and bread to meat, fish and prepared food.

It’s also a good place to try some Latvian food.

If you’re interested in trying local food during your one day in Riga, this is somewhere I’d definitely include rather than treating food as an afterthought.

Try Some Latvian Food

If you only have one day in Riga, I’d make a point of trying at least one or two Latvian dishes.

Some things to look for include grey peas with bacon, potato dishes, rye bread, smoked fish and piragi, a Latvian pastry traditionally filled with bacon and onion.

You’ll find local food at Central Market, but you can also have a proper meal at a restaurant in the city center.

I wouldn’t spend your entire day going from restaurant to restaurant just to try everything. Pick a couple of things that sound good and move on.

You’re in Riga for one day. There is still a city to see.

See the Freedom Monument

From Central Market, make your way toward the Freedom Monument.

It’s one of the most recognizable landmarks in Riga and is right in the center of the city, so it’s easy to include without making a separate trip just to see it.

You don’t need to spend a huge amount of time here. Take a look, walk around the surrounding area, and continue toward the Art Nouveau district.

This is one of those stops that makes sense on a one-day Riga itinerary because it’s on the way rather than something you have to go out of your way to see.

See Riga’s Art Nouveau Architecture

One of the things I’d definitely add to one day in Riga is the Art Nouveau district.

Riga is famous for its Art Nouveau architecture, and you don’t need to visit a museum to experience it. Just walk around the streets around Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela and look at the buildings.

This is also a nice change after spending the morning around the Old Town. The architecture feels completely different.

If you like taking photos, bring your camera out here because there are plenty of buildings worth stopping for.

You don’t need a tour or a complicated route. Walk around the area and see what catches your attention.

What to Do in Riga in the Evening

For the evening, I’d keep things simple.

Head back toward the center and have dinner, then go for drinks if that’s your thing.

I spent a lot of evenings in Riga when I was based there, so I’ve experienced the city at night as part of normal life rather than as something I had to fit into a sightseeing schedule.

There are plenty of bars around the center and Old Town, so you don’t need to plan your entire evening around one specific place.

If you still have energy after dinner, this is also a good time to walk around the Old Town again. It looks completely different once the streets are lit up and the daytime crowds have disappeared.

What I Would Skip With Only One Day in Riga

The biggest mistake I’d make with a one-day trip to Riga would be trying to do absolutely everything.

You don’t need to visit every museum, climb every tower and see every historical building.

If you’re interested in history, choose one museum rather than trying to squeeze several into the same day. If you’re more interested in architecture and food, spend that time exploring the city instead.

I’d also save Jūrmala for another day if you’re visiting Riga for only 24 hours.

I really like Jūrmala and have stayed there myself, but I wouldn’t take a big chunk out of your only day in Riga to go to the beach. If you have an extra day, that’s different.

For one day, stay in Riga and actually experience the city.

Where to Stay in Riga for One Day

If you only have one day in Riga, stay in the city center near the Old Town.

That will make your trip much easier because you’ll be close to most of the places you’ll want to visit, and you won’t waste your limited time traveling back and forth.

I’ve stayed in several different parts of Riga during my visits. For a short city break, I’d choose the center every time.

I’ve spent much longer than one day in Riga, and one of the things I like about the city is that you can enjoy it without constantly trying to tick things off a list. For a short visit, I’d keep the same approach: see the important stuff, eat well, and leave yourself some time to actually enjoy being there.
