I spent two days in Bandar Seri Begawan, which was enough time to see the main highlights of the capital. I visited Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, explored Kampong Ayer, went to the night market, and took a boat trip through the mangroves hoping to spot proboscis monkeys.

What I noticed while traveling around Brunei is that the weather can really affect your experience. Unlike destinations where you can spend hours inside museums or attractions if the weather is bad, many of Brunei’s best experiences happen outdoors.

Walking through the quiet streets of Bandar Seri Begawan, visiting the mosques, and exploring the waterways are all things that are much more enjoyable when you can actually spend time outside comfortably.

Brunei in Dry Season (February to April)

The period between February and April is generally considered one of the best times to visit Brunei. Rainfall tends to be lower compared to other months, which means you have a better chance of enjoying outdoor activities without your plans being affected by heavy rain.

Temperatures are warm and humid throughout the year, so regardless of when you visit, you should be prepared for tropical weather.

Crowds

Crowds are rarely something you need to worry about in Brunei. Compared to neighboring countries like Malaysia, Thailand, or Indonesia, Brunei receives far fewer visitors, even during the more popular travel periods.

May to July can still be a good time to visit Brunei. Temperatures remain hot and humid, and while rainfall starts increasing, you can still have plenty of good weather for exploring.

Like most tropical destinations, weather can change quickly, so it’s always worth keeping your plans flexible.

Crowds

One of the great things about visiting Brunei is that you don’t have to plan around large crowds. Even during busier periods, the country still feels much quieter compared to other Southeast Asian destinations.

The easiest way to get to Brunei is by flying into Brunei International Airport (BWN) in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Most travelers visiting Brunei arrive from other Southeast Asian countries, especially Malaysia. I personally flew from Kuala Lumpur, which is one of the easiest routes if you’re already traveling around the region.

Since Brunei is a small country and most visitors stay in Bandar Seri Begawan, the airport is conveniently located close to the city.

When I visited Brunei, my hotel included a free airport transfer, which made arriving alone much easier because I didn’t have to worry about arranging transportation after landing.

That being said, I don’t think the weather should completely stop you from visiting Brunei. This is not a destination where you need to spend a week planning around perfect conditions. Most travelers only visit for a few days, usually as part of a bigger Southeast Asia itinerary, and even during the wetter months you can still have sunny periods and enjoy the country.

One of the things I loved about Brunei was how different it felt from many other destinations in Southeast Asia. It was quiet, peaceful and much less crowded than neighboring countries, which made exploring the capital a completely different experience.

Personally, if I were planning another trip to Brunei, I would visit during the dry season to have the best chance of enjoying all the outdoor experiences without worrying too much about rain.
