Brunei Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Days in Bandar Seri Begawan

If you only have a short time in Brunei, I recommend spending 2 days in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Two days is enough to see the main highlights without rushing. You’ll have time to visit Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, explore Kampong Ayer, visit Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, see the Royal Regalia Museum, try local food and take a boat trip through the mangroves to look for proboscis monkeys.

Brunei is not a destination where you need a long itinerary. The experience is more about slowing down and seeing a different side of Southeast Asia, with fewer crowds, impressive architecture and a much quieter atmosphere than neighbouring countries.

If you only have one day in Brunei, you can still see the main sights in Bandar Seri Begawan, but two days will give you a much more relaxed experience.

Brunei Itinerary Day 1: Exploring Bandar Seri Begawan

For your first day in Brunei, I would focus on the main sights in Bandar Seri Begawan. Most of the city’s highlights are close together, making it easy to explore at a relaxed pace.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Start your Brunei itinerary with one of the most famous landmarks in the country, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.

The mosque is known for its golden dome, white architecture and beautiful location beside the water. It is one of those places that immediately stands out when you arrive in Bandar Seri Begawan.

I visited during my time in the capital, and it was one of the highlights because it looked completely different from many other sights I had seen around Southeast Asia.

Remember to dress appropriately when visiting religious sites in Brunei.

Royal Regalia Museum

Next, visit the Royal Regalia Museum to learn more about Brunei’s monarchy and history.

The museum displays royal artefacts, gifts and items connected to the Sultan, making it a good stop if you want to understand more about the country beyond just visiting its landmarks.

It is also a good option if you visit during the hotter part of the day, as it gives you a chance to explore something indoors.

Walk Around Bandar Seri Begawan

One of the things I enjoyed most about Brunei was simply walking around Bandar Seri Begawan.

Compared to other Southeast Asian capitals like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta, the city feels much quieter and less chaotic.

Walking along the streets, seeing the mosques, the river and the slower pace of daily life is part of the experience of visiting Brunei.

Explore Kampong Ayer (The Water Village)

In the afternoon, head to Kampong Ayer, also known as the Water Village.

This historic area is built on the Brunei River, with houses and buildings connected by wooden walkways.

The best way to experience Kampong Ayer is by taking a local boat, which gives you a different perspective of Bandar Seri Begawan and shows a unique part of Brunei’s culture.

Gadong Night Market

Finish your first day at Gadong Night Market.

Night markets are one of my favourite things to visit while travelling around Southeast Asia because they show a more everyday side of a destination.

It is a simple experience, but it is a great place to try local food and spend the evening after exploring the city.

Brunei Itinerary Day 2: Mosques, Mangroves and More of Bandar Seri Begawan

On your second day in Brunei, I would focus on some of the other highlights outside the main city centre, including one of the most unique experiences in the country.

Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

Start your second day by visiting Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque.

While Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is probably the most famous mosque in Brunei, Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is also impressive because of its size and architecture.

It is another chance to see the incredible religious buildings that Brunei is known for.

Take a Mangrove Boat Trip to See Proboscis Monkeys

One of the most unique experiences to add to your Brunei itinerary is taking a boat trip through the mangroves to look for proboscis monkeys.

This was something I wanted to do because it was an experience I couldn’t easily find in many other countries.

I did take a boat trip during my visit, although I later found out I probably paid more than I should have. I paid around €20 for the ride, and a friend told me afterwards that I had likely been overcharged, especially because I shared the boat.

My advice is to ask around, compare prices and negotiate before booking.

The experience itself was still worth doing, but don’t agree to the first price you are given.

More Time Around Bandar Seri Begawan

After your boat trip, use the rest of your day to explore anything you missed or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the capital.

Brunei is a destination where slowing down is part of the experience. Take your time, revisit places you enjoyed and enjoy seeing a much quieter side of Southeast Asia.

Use the extra day to revisit places you enjoyed, spend more time exploring Bandar Seri Begawan and add extra experiences outside the city.

Brunei is not a destination where you need to fill every hour with activities. A third day is better suited for travellers who enjoy slow travel and taking their time rather than rushing through highlights.

Most travelers visiting Brunei arrive through Brunei International Airport in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Since Brunei is a small country and does not have many international connections, most visitors arrive with a connection from nearby hubs such as Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.

I personally arrived in Brunei from Kuala Lumpur during my Southeast Asia backpacking trip, which was one of the easiest ways to add Brunei to a regional itinerary.

If you are already traveling around Southeast Asia, Brunei is quite easy to include as a short stop before continuing to destinations like Malaysia, Indonesia, or Singapore.
