Before my first trip to Bratislava, I couldn’t have told you much about the city. Slovakia was my tenth country, I was on my first solo backpacking trip around Europe, and the only place I knew I wanted to visit was Bratislava Castle.

I ended up visiting Bratislava twice, and both visits made me like the city even more. It’s not the European capital with the longest list of attractions, and I don’t think it needs to be. Some of my favorite memories came from simply walking around the Old Town, finding another street to explore and taking my time instead of worrying about seeing absolutely everything.

If you’re visiting Bratislava for the first time, don’t try to fill every hour of your itinerary. My favorite things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia, were exploring the Old Town, visiting Bratislava Castle, walking along the Danube and stopping whenever I found something that looked interesting.

I’ve visited Bratislava twice, and I think that’s the best way to experience the city. Don’t rush from one attraction to the next just because it’s on a list. Bratislava is small enough that you can see the main sights while still having plenty of time to enjoy the city.

My Experience Visiting Bratislava

My first visit to Bratislava was during my first solo backpacking trip around Europe. At that point, every new destination felt intimidating because I was still learning how to travel alone. I almost missed my train stop, my phone battery died after I arrived and I got completely lost trying to find my hostel.

I visited Bratislava a second time later. That trip couldn’t have been more different. I had my first experience with bedbugs in a hostel, but I also met a group of Portuguese travelers who I later traveled around the Baltics with.

After visiting Bratislava twice, I realized my favorite part of the city was never a single attraction. It was how easy it was to spend hours walking around without feeling like I was missing out on anything. That’s exactly why I still think Bratislava is worth visiting today.

1. Explore Bratislava Old Town

Exploring the Old Town is one of the best things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia, and where I spent most of my time during both of my visits. This is the heart of the city, full of colorful buildings, little squares, cafés, restaurants and many of Bratislava’s main attractions.

I recommend taking your time here instead of just walking from one landmark to the next. Some of my favorite moments in Bratislava were simply wandering around without a plan and seeing what I’d find around the next corner.

2. Visit Bratislava Castle

If you’ve seen photos of Bratislava before, you’ve probably already seen Bratislava Castle. Sitting on top of a hill overlooking the city, it’s one of the most recognizable landmarks in Slovakia and definitely one of the best things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The walk up is worth it for the views alone. From the top, you can look over the Old Town, the Danube River and even see Austria on a clear day. Even if you don’t visit the museum inside, I’d still recommend making the climb.

3. Join a Slovak Food Tour

Trying local food is one of the best ways to experience a new country, and Bratislava is no exception. If it’s your first time in Slovakia, joining a food tour is an easy way to discover traditional dishes while learning more about the country’s history and culture.

It’s also a great option if you’re traveling alone since you’ll get to meet other travelers while visiting some of the city’s best local restaurants.

4. Walk Through Michael’s Gate

Michael’s Gate is the last remaining medieval city gate in Bratislava and one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Chances are you’ll walk through it without even trying since it’s one of the main entrances into the Old Town.

Take a few minutes to stop instead of simply passing through. The tower is one of the most photographed places in Bratislava, and the surrounding streets are some of my favorite to explore in the city.

5. Walk Along the Danube Promenade

Walking along the Danube Promenade is another one of the best things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia, especially on a sunny day. The path follows the river and connects several of the city’s main attractions, with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the views.

I ended up walking here more than once during my time in Bratislava. It’s a nice break from the Old Town and one of the best places to sit for a while before continuing to explore the city.

6. Take a Panoramic Danube River Cruise

Seeing Bratislava from the Danube gives you a completely different perspective of the city. If you have a couple of hours to spare, I’d recommend taking a panoramic river cruise to see landmarks like Bratislava Castle, the UFO Tower and the city’s waterfront from the water.

It’s also a nice way to take a break from walking while still sightseeing.

7. Visit St. Martin’s Cathedral

St. Martin’s Cathedral is one of the most important landmarks in Bratislava and a stop that’s easy to include while exploring the Old Town. Built in the Gothic style, it was the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries and remains one of the city’s most historic buildings.

Even if you’re not someone who normally visits churches, it’s worth stopping by while exploring the city center.

8. Find Čumil and the Other Bronze Statues

One of the most fun things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia, is finding the city’s famous bronze statues scattered around the Old Town. The most popular is Čumil, the worker peeking out of a manhole, but he’s not the only one.

Keep an eye out as you walk around because you’ll come across several others, and they make some of the most photographed spots in Bratislava.

9. Go Wine Tasting in Bratislava

Slovakia isn’t usually the first country people think of for wine, but it has a long winemaking tradition that’s worth discovering. Joining a wine tasting is a great way to try local wines while learning more about the country’s vineyards and wine culture.

If you enjoy trying local food and drinks when you travel, I’d definitely add this to your Bratislava itinerary.

10. Visit the Blue Church

The Blue Church is probably the most unique building in Bratislava. Officially called the Church of St. Elizabeth, it’s famous for its light blue exterior, matching interior and fairytale-like architecture.

It’s only a short walk from the Old Town, making it an easy stop while exploring the city, and it’s easily one of the most photographed places in Bratislava.

11. Relax in Bratislava’s Main Square

Bratislava’s Main Square is one of the liveliest spots in the city and a place you’ll probably pass through several times while exploring the Old Town. Surrounded by colorful historic buildings, cafés and restaurants, it’s a great place to take a break before continuing your day.

Grab a coffee, sit outside for a while and enjoy the atmosphere. Sometimes the best part of exploring a new city is simply slowing down for a few minutes and watching daily life go by.

12. Take a Traditional Slovak Cooking Class

If you’re looking for something different than museums and sightseeing, consider joining a traditional Slovak cooking class. It’s a fun way to learn more about the country’s food while making a few classic dishes with the help of a local.

Plus, you’ll leave with recipes you can actually make again once you’re back home.

13. Visit the UFO Observation Deck

One of the best views in Bratislava is from the UFO Observation Deck, located on top of the SNP Bridge. From here you’ll get panoramic views over the Old Town, Bratislava Castle and the Danube River.

14. Watch the Sunset from Bratislava Castle

If you’re spending at least one night in Bratislava, head back up to Bratislava Castle before sunset. The castle is beautiful at any time of day, but watching the sun go down over the city and the Danube makes the views even better.

It’s a simple way to end your day and one I’d recommend if your schedule allows.

15. Take a Day Trip to Vienna

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Bratislava is its location. Vienna is only about an hour away by train or bus, making it one of the easiest day trips you can take in Europe.

If you’ve never been to Austria before, I’d definitely take advantage of how close the two capitals are and visit both on the same trip.

16. Take a Day Trip to Hallstatt and Salzburg

If you have a little more time, another great option is taking a day trip from Bratislava to Hallstatt and Salzburg. It’s a long day, but it’s an easy way to visit two of Austria’s most famous destinations without worrying about planning trains, buses or your itinerary.

If you’re short on time but still want to see more of Central Europe, this is an experience worth considering.

I visited Bratislava twice and enjoyed it both times. Some of my favorite memories weren’t tied to one specific attraction but to walking around the Old Town, climbing up to the castle and discovering parts of the city I hadn’t planned to visit. If you’re putting together a Central Europe itinerary, I’d definitely make room for Bratislava.
