How many days in Menton do you need? My Quick Answer

How many days in menton

For most people, one day in Menton is enough.

That’s exactly what I did, and I never felt like I was rushing. Menton isn’t a huge city packed with attractions, so you can comfortably explore the Old Town, walk along the seafront, enjoy the beaches, stop for lunch and still have time to simply wander around.

If you enjoy slower travel, spending time at the beach or using Menton as your base to explore the French Riviera, then 2 days is a great option.

I’d only recommend 3 or more days if you’re planning to stay in Menton while doing day trips to places like Monaco, Nice or even Italy. Otherwise, I personally think one full day is enough to experience everything Menton has to offer.

Is one day in Menton enough?

I think the biggest mistake people make with Menton is assuming they’ll need several days there.

That’s exactly what I thought before visiting too. I kept looking at photos online and wondering if I should spend two or three days there, but after actually going, I honestly think one day is enough for most people.

I visited Menton as a day trip from Nice and never felt like I was rushing. I had enough time to walk around the Old Town, get lost in the colorful streets, walk along the seafront, stop for lunch, sit by the beach for a while and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

The thing with Menton is that it isn’t packed with tourist attractions, and I actually think that’s what makes it so special. You’re not constantly running from one landmark to another trying to tick things off a list. The whole experience is just walking around, finding beautiful little corners, enjoying the views and taking your time.

If that’s the kind of trip you’re looking for, one day in Menton is more than enough. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have done anything very differently if I’d stayed longer. The only reason I’d recommend spending more than one day there is if you want a slower beach holiday or if you’re planning to use Menton as your base to explore the rest of the French Riviera.

When should you stay longer?

Even though I think one day in Menton is enough for most people, there are a few situations where staying 2 or 3 days actually makes sense.

If you’re the kind of traveler who likes taking things slowly, spending time at the beach, sitting at a café for a couple of hours or just wandering around without checking the time, then staying longer will probably suit you. Menton has a really relaxed atmosphere, and I can easily imagine spending a few days here without feeling the need to constantly move around.

Another reason to stay longer is if you’re planning to use Menton as your base to explore the French Riviera. From here, you can easily visit Monaco, Nice, Èze, Villefranche-sur-Mer or even Ventimiglia in Italy, so staying a couple of nights saves you from changing accommodation every day.

If you don’t want to organize transport yourself, there are also some great tours that combine several French Riviera highlights in one day.

For me, though, one day was enough. I saw everything I wanted to see, had time to get lost in the Old Town, walk along the seafront, stop for lunch and simply enjoy the village. If I ever stayed longer, it wouldn’t be because I hadn’t seen enough of Menton—it would simply be because it’s a nice place to relax while exploring the rest of the French Riviera.

Should you stay in Menton or Nice?

This really depends on the kind of trip you’re planning.

I stayed in Nice and visited Menton on a day trip, and if it’s your first time exploring the French Riviera, I’d probably recommend doing the same.

Nice has a much bigger choice of hotels, restaurants and things to do. It’s also much better connected by train, which makes it really easy to visit places like Menton, Monaco, Èze or Villefranche-sur-Mer without having to keep moving hotels every couple of days.

Some hotels I’d recommend in Nice:

Budget: Ibis budget Nice Californie Lenval

Mid-range: Hotel du centre

Luxury: AC Hotel by Marriott Nice

Menton, on the other hand, is a much quieter place. If you’re looking for a slower trip where your plan is simply spending time at the beach, walking around the Old Town and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, then staying here for a couple of nights could be a great idea.

Some good hotel options are:

Budget: Hôtel Riva Art & SPA

Mid-range: Ibis Styles Menton Centre

Luxury: Villa Genesis

Using Menton as a base

best time to visit menton

If you decide to spend two or three days in Menton, it’s actually a really good base for exploring this part of the French Riviera.

Some of the easiest day trips from Menton are:

Monaco (around 15 minutes by train)
Nice (around 40 minutes by train)
Ventimiglia, Italy (around 10 minutes by train)
Èze, one of the most beautiful villages on the French Riviera

If you don’t want to organize transport yourself, there are also guided tours that visit several of these places in one day, including Monaco, Èze and other French Riviera highlights.

FAQs

Is two days in Menton too much?

Not necessarily. Two days is a good option if you want to spend time at the beach, take things slowly or avoid rushing. It also gives you the chance to enjoy Menton in the evening after most day-trippers leave.

Should I stay in Menton or Nice?

If it’s your first time visiting the French Riviera, I’d stay in Nice and visit Menton as a day trip. Nice has more hotels, restaurants and transport connections. Menton is a better choice if you’re looking for a quieter and more relaxing stay.

Can I use Menton as a base to explore the French Riviera?

Yes. Menton has easy train connections to Monaco, Nice and even Ventimiglia in Italy, making it a good base if you’re planning several day trips without moving hotels.

Is Menton worth staying overnight?

If you’re looking for a quiet beach town with a relaxed atmosphere, yes. But if your goal is to explore as much of the French Riviera as possible, I’d personally stay in Nice and visit Menton for the day.

Final thoughts: How many days in Menton do you need?

For me, one day in Menton was the perfect amount of time.

I managed to see everything I wanted without feeling rushed, and I left thinking I’d made the right decision by visiting it as a day trip from Nice. If your idea of a good trip is wandering around colorful streets, relaxing by the beach and taking things slowly, then spending two or three days in Menton can also be a great option.

At the end of the day, there isn’t really a wrong answer. It just depends on the kind of trip you’re planning.
