I’ve visited Vienna twice and somehow managed to be absolutely freezing both times. And considering how much time you spend walking around Vienna, I definitely think the weather affected how much I enjoyed the city.

If I went back, I would 100% choose the warmer months. But that doesn’t necessarily mean summer is the best time to visit Vienna for everyone. If you want Christmas markets, you obviously need to embrace the cold, while spring and fall can be better if you want comfortable weather without visiting in the middle of summer.

Best Time to Visit Vienna: Quick Answer

For most people, the best time to visit Vienna is May, June or September. You get warmer weather that makes exploring the city much more enjoyable without necessarily visiting during the hottest part of summer.

If you want the warmest weather possible, go between June and August. Vienna has properly warm summers, with temperatures sometimes reaching 30°C (86°F) and above.

But there is one big exception: Christmas. If seeing Vienna’s Christmas markets is high on your list, visit from mid-November through December and accept that you’re going to need a proper winter coat.

Vienna Weather Throughout the Year

Vienna has four very different seasons. Winters are cold, summers can get hot, and spring and fall sit somewhere in between.

There isn’t really a rainy season you need to avoid, so I would choose when to visit based much more on temperature, crowds and what you actually want to do in Vienna.

Spring in Vienna: March to May

Spring is a great middle ground if you don’t want winter temperatures but also don’t want to visit during summer.

March can still be chilly, so I would lean more toward April or May, especially if you plan on spending most of your days sightseeing.

By May, the weather is much more appealing for walking around the historic center and visiting places like Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere without dealing with the hottest summer temperatures.

I would choose: May.

Summer in Vienna: June to August

If good weather is your priority, summer is the best time to visit Vienna.

The days are long, temperatures are warm and you’ll have much better conditions for spending hours walking around outside. It can also get properly hot, with temperatures above 30°C (86°F) possible during summer.

Of course, good weather also brings more visitors.

But after visiting Vienna twice when it was freezing, I would happily deal with more tourists if it meant finally seeing the city when I wasn’t cold the entire time.

I would choose: June, before the hottest part of summer.

Fall in Vienna: September to November

September is another month I would seriously consider. You can still get pleasant weather, but you’re moving away from the main summer period.

October gets cooler, and by November you’re heading toward winter again.

But November has something completely different going for it: Christmas markets. They generally start opening around the middle of the month, so late November can be a great time to visit if you want the Christmas atmosphere without waiting until December.

I would choose: September for sightseeing or late November for Christmas markets.

Winter in Vienna: December to February

This is the Vienna I know. Cold.

Both of my trips were during cold weather and I really didn’t enjoy that part of the experience. Vienna is a big city, and when you’re spending hours walking around trying to see everything, being freezing isn’t exactly helping.

December is the exception because Vienna is famous for its Christmas markets and the city becomes a completely different destination during Advent.

January and February are much quieter months, but unless you’re specifically looking for a winter city break, I personally wouldn’t choose them.

I would choose: December for Christmas markets. Otherwise, I would wait for spring.

Best Time to Visit Vienna for the Christmas Markets

If the Christmas markets are one of the main reasons you’re going, the best time to visit Vienna is from mid-November through December.

Vienna has Christmas markets all over the city, including at Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn Palace, Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz and Spittelberg.

For 2026, several major markets open between November 6 and November 20, with many running until December 23 or 26 and some winter markets continuing into January.

I would personally aim for late November or early December. You’ll get the full Christmas atmosphere without going quite as close to Christmas itself.

Just don’t make the mistake of thinking winter means Vienna will be empty. December is actually one of the city’s busiest months for visitors.

Best Time to Visit Vienna for Good Weather

For good weather without aiming for the hottest part of the year, I would choose May, June or September.

If you specifically want summer temperatures, then go in June, July or August.

For me, June is the winner. You have long days and warm weather, and I’d much rather explore Schönbrunn and walk around Vienna in the sunshine than repeat my previous freezing experiences.

Best Time to Visit Vienna for Fewer Crowds

If avoiding crowds matters more to you than having the best weather, January and February are the quietest months.

But there’s obviously a reason for that: it’s winter.

For a better compromise, I would look at the shoulder seasons instead. April, early May, late September or October can make more sense if you want fewer tourists without deliberately choosing the coldest months of the year.

And don’t assume December is quiet because it’s winter. Christmas is a huge deal in Vienna, and December actually brings some of the city’s highest visitor numbers.

When I Would Visit Vienna

I’ve visited Vienna twice, and both times it was freezing. If I went back for a third time, I would visit in June.

I didn’t particularly like Vienna on either of my trips. I found it expensive and honestly a little boring, but I also know that walking around freezing cold definitely didn’t improve my opinion of the city.
