Yes, Vienna is safe for solo female travelers. I felt comfortable traveling around the city alone and never had any situation that made me feel genuinely unsafe.

I was able to walk around on my own, use public transport, explore the city and go about my days without feeling like I had to constantly worry about being alone. For me, Vienna was an easy city to travel around solo.

My Personal Experience in Vienna as a Woman Traveling Alone

I first visited Vienna on my three-month solo backpacking trip, when I was still pretty new to traveling alone. I arrived from Bratislava, and going from a small city to somewhere as big as Vienna was definitely an adjustment.

Stay somewhere with easy access to public transport

Because Vienna is such a big city, where you stay makes a huge difference. You don’t necessarily need to stay directly in the historic center, but I would choose accommodation somewhere with good public transport connections so you’re not making your life harder every time you want to go somewhere.

I learned this the hard way on my first trip because I was trying to save money on accommodation, and cheap isn’t always better when you’re dealing with a huge city.

Stay connected

Having internet when you’re traveling alone is one of those things you don’t really appreciate until you don’t have it. I want to be able to check Google Maps, look up my accommodation, check public transport and contact someone without having to hunt down Wi-Fi.

You don’t need to spend your entire trip paranoid about pickpockets. Just don’t make it ridiculously easy for someone to grab your stuff.

Keep your phone charged

This is one I learned from experience while traveling alone. Your phone is basically your map, translator, transport guide, accommodation information and emergency contact all in one.

I always recommend leaving with enough battery to get yourself back to your accommodation, especially if you’re going somewhere unfamiliar.

Save your accommodation address

Before heading out, I like having my accommodation saved on my phone rather than relying on remembering the name.

This sounds ridiculously simple, but when you’re tired, your phone is dying and you’re trying to navigate a huge city, having the exact address ready can save you a lot of unnecessary stress.

Know how you’ll get back before staying out late

You don’t need to avoid Vienna after dark, but if you’re traveling alone, I think it’s worth knowing how you’re getting back before you head out.

Vienna’s public transport runs late, and the subway operates around the clock on Friday and Saturday nights and nights before public holidays; night buses also operate daily.

That makes things considerably easier if you’re out later than planned.

What I Would Do Differently as a Solo Woman

I was still very new to solo travel when I first visited Vienna, so there are definitely things I would do differently now.

• Travel in the summer – Both of my visits were freezing cold, and I think having good weather would have made a huge difference to how much I enjoyed exploring Vienna.
• Choose my accommodation more carefully – I booked the cheapest hostel I could find because Vienna was expensive, and that wasn’t the best decision.

I think Vienna is a good option if you’re traveling alone, especially if you’re comfortable navigating a bigger city and using public transport. I would just recommend coming in the warmer months, choosing your accommodation carefully and taking the usual precautions you would anywhere else.
