Riga Guide: The Complete Guide to Visiting Riga, Latvia
I’ve spent months in Riga across multiple trips, staying in different parts of the city and coming back at different times of year. This Riga guide brings together everything I’ve learned from actually spending time here, so you don’t have to piece together your trip from ten different websites.
So whether you’re coming to Riga for one day, spending a long weekend here, or using the city as a base for exploring Latvia, these are all my Riga guides in one place.

Is Riga Worth Visiting?
Before booking anything, you might be wondering whether Riga is actually worth adding to your itinerary. I’ve spent months here and have a pretty good idea of what I like about the city, what I think is overrated, and what kind of traveler I think will enjoy it.
Riga has a really interesting mix of medieval architecture, Art Nouveau buildings, markets, parks, nightlife, and everyday local neighborhoods. The Old Town is the obvious starting point, but I would definitely not spend your entire trip there.

Is Riga Safe for Solo Female Travelers?
I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around Riga on my own, so if you’re coming here as a solo female traveler, I’d read this before your trip.
This guide covers my own experience rather than giving you a generic list of safety advice. I talk about what it’s actually like traveling around Riga alone, where I felt comfortable, and the things I would personally keep in mind.

The Best Time to Visit Riga
Riga can feel completely different depending on when you visit. Summer gives you long days and much better weather for spending time outside, while the colder months have a very different atmosphere and can make some of the outdoor sightseeing less appealing.
I’ve stayed in Riga three different times, so this guide is based on what I actually experienced rather than simply repeating the usual “summer is the best” advice.

How Many Days Do You Need in Riga?
Riga is manageable in a short trip, but how many days you need really depends on whether you want to see just the main sights or also explore beyond the city.
One day can give you a taste of Riga, while two or three days gives you much more breathing room for the Old Town, Art Nouveau district, Central Market, museums, tours, and potentially a day trip. Riga’s small center makes it particularly easy to combine several of these areas in one trip.

Where to Stay in Riga
Choosing where to stay in Riga is one of the first things I’d sort out after deciding how long you’re staying. Old Town is the obvious choice if you want to be right in the middle of the main sights, but staying just outside it can give you a different atmosphere and sometimes better value.
I’ve put together both an area guide and separate hotel and hostel recommendations, so you can choose based on your budget rather than just picking the first hotel you see.
- Backpacker: Blue Bird Boutique Hostel – Riga Old Town
- Budget: Ibis Riga Centre
- Mid-Range: Wellton Riverside SPA Hotel
- Luxury: Grand Palace Hotel – Small Luxury Hotels of the World
The best area for you depends on whether you care most about being close to the Old Town, nightlife, transport, restaurants, or having a quieter place to stay.

Things to Do in Riga
Riga’s Old Town is where most people start, and you should absolutely explore it. But there’s plenty more to see once you leave the medieval center, including the Art Nouveau district, Central Market, Freedom Monument, museums, parks, and the Daugava waterfront.
This is where I’d start when deciding what you actually want to do during your trip.

One Day in Riga
Only have 24 hours? You can still see a surprising amount of Riga because the main historic areas are relatively close together.
This itinerary is for when you need to make your time count without trying to cram every possible attraction into one day.

2 Days in Riga
Two days gives you much more flexibility. You can explore the Old Town properly, see some of the Art Nouveau architecture, visit Central Market, and still have time to wander without feeling like you’re constantly checking the clock.

3 Days in Riga Latvia
Three days is where I think Riga starts to feel much more relaxed. You can get beyond the obvious sights and have time for neighborhoods, museums, tours, or even a short trip outside the city.

Riga Tours
You absolutely can explore Riga independently, but tours can be useful if you want more context about the city or simply want somebody else to handle the planning.
There are plenty of walking tours around the Old Town and Art Nouveau areas, as well as food tours, canal cruises, sunset boat trips, and tours that take you outside Riga.

Riga’s canals and the Daugava give you a completely different view of the city, and a boat tour is particularly nice if you want a break from walking around the streets.
There are regular sightseeing cruises, electric boats, sunset options, and different ways to combine the canal and river.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to explore Riga, especially around the Old Town and central areas. A guided walk can also give you a lot more context about the buildings and history than simply walking past them yourself.
And because food is a pretty big part of experiencing Riga, I’ve also included two food tours at the end of this guide.

Day Trips from Riga
If you have more than a couple of days in Riga, I’d seriously consider getting outside the city. Latvia has forests, beaches, castles, and smaller towns that are easy to reach from Riga.
Sigulda and the surrounding Gauja region are particularly good if you want nature and castles, while Jūrmala gives you an easy change of scenery if you want the coast. Riga is also well connected to other parts of Latvia by train and bus.

I’ve picked six places that I think are worth considering if you have extra time in Riga, rather than simply listing every possible destination you could technically reach in a day.

Riga Guide: Final Thoughts
Riga is a city I’ve had enough time in to know that I wouldn’t plan the same trip here as someone coming for a quick weekend. There’s enough in the center to fill a couple of days, but once you have more time, I’d use it to explore beyond the Old Town and potentially add a day trip.
If it’s your first visit, I’d start by figuring out how many days you have, then choose where to stay and work through the best things to do in Riga. After that, you can add a boat tour, walking tour, food tour, or day trip depending on what you’re actually interested in.
That’s the reason I’ve put all of these Riga guides together: you can use this page as the starting point, then jump into whichever part of the trip you need help planning next.
