~ A while back I shared with you guys the best places to visit in Tuscany, Italy. Now, I decided to give you an idea of how much it costs to spend a week in the region of Tuscany and visit all of the places I mentioned on that post.
FLORENCE | 6 nights
Florence is for sure the one place in Tuscany you don’t want to miss and the most obvious on this itinerary. There’s no doubt Florence is on of the most beautiful cities in the country and one you must visit at least once in your life.
ACCOMMODATION | 120€
There are a few hostels in Florence that you can choose for your three nights stay in the city. For this budget I am suggesting the hostel I stayed when visiting Florence, Plus Florence. This is a very big hostel with many dorms and private rooms available. It has a really good location at walking distance from the train station as well as the must see attractions in Florence like the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio. Plus, it has an indoor pool that you can use for free, as well as a rooftop pool that you can enjoy during the summer. A night in a female dorm will cost you around 20€ (25€ in the summer months). As in this itinerary you’ll spend three nights in Florence, you’ll need a 75€ budget for your accommodation.
FOOD | 90€
Just like in previous budget itineraries I’ve shared here on the blog, I am building this budget with 15€ a day for food. This covers your meals for the day – remember you are on a budget so its only possible if you watch how much you are spending and restaurants are out of the picture -, and it allows you to eat giant pizza slices and the gelato you so much want to try in Florence.
TAKE A DAY TRIP TO SIENA | 20€
Now that you have spent the last few days exploring the beautiful city of Florence, it’s time for a little adventure and to take a day trip to the smaller city of Siena. The best way to travel from Florence to Siena is to catch the train. The journey only takes 1h30 and the ticket costs 10€ each way.
TAKE A DAY TRIP TO SAN GIMIGNANO | 13,6€
If you choose to spend a few nights in Siena you can do this day trip from there instead of Florence. But because I’m trying to give you the cheapest option to visit all of these places in Tuscany, I am giving you the option to do the day trip from Florence. It’s a longer day, but if you stay in Siena because there are no hostels and cheap accommodations, you will have to spend at least 40€ a night for a simple Bed and Breakfast and by staying longer in Florence and visiting both Siena and San Gimignano as two separate day trips, you will spend a lot less money.
To get to San Gimignano from Florence, there are no trains that go all the way to the town, so the best option is to catch the bus. The ticket for the bus costs 6,8€ each way, so 13,6€ total. The journey takes between 1h30 and 2h.
TAKE A DAY TRIP TO PISA & LUCCA | 21€
You can’t really leave Tuscany without seeing the famous Leaning Tower in Pisa so on your last day of this one week budget itinerary in Tuscany, you will get to explore not one but two beautiful places in the region, Pisa and Lucca. It may sound like seeing two cities in one day is a lot but it’s actually really easy and it’s plenty of time. I did it, so you can do it as well.
The cheapest and fastest way to do this day trip is by catching the train. Start your morning in Lucca. This is a very pretty town and there are almost no tourists in sight. The train from Florence to Lucca takes 1h30 and it costs 8€. Spend your morning in Lucca and around lunch time catch the train from Lucca to Pisa. Its only a thirty minutes train ride and the ticket costs 4€. Spend your afternoon exploring Pisa. Go to the Leaning Tower and take some time to walk around and get lost in the city. There’s a lot more to Pisa than the Leaning Tower and you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the city without too many people as all the tourists gather around the tower and they don’t really go beyond that. At the end of the day, catch the train back to Florence. The train takes about an hour and the ticket costs 9€.
- Train from Florence to Lucca – 8€
- Train from Lucca to Pisa – 4€
- Train from Pisa to Florence – 9€
So, how much does it cost to spend one week exploring Tuscany in Italy? If you follow this itinerary, one week in Tuscany will cost you 265€. All this is possible by basing yourself in Florence for six nights, having three days to explore the city of Florence and then three days to go on day trips to Siena, San Gimignano and finally Pisa and Lucca. As you can see, it doesn’t have to be expensive at all and you can have an entire week in Tuscany for as little as 265€.
